Display modules in VirtueMart and other extensions

Hello,

I would like to know how to display modules in certain categories of VirtueMart. Is this possible? There is no menu, so how to assign modules to items of the extension??

I have this problem with other extensions as well. I usually build in "if Itemid==blabla then show module blabla" in the template, but I guess this is a clumsy way to do it.

Any suggestions?
