SEF URL's

Greetings everyone,

I am trying to get my url's to be sef but when I change the global settings to use sef url's I get a 500 error on every link in my website. Can someone tell me what I need to do in order to fix this? (I am new at joomla and have the 1.5 version) Thank you!!
