Latest News on Frontpage

Any care to tell me how the latest news articles mange to lay themselves out as per Beez or default templates.
Seems strange that the first piece of news takes up whole width of column but there after it splits into two.

The code that is driving this is:
params->get('showComponent')) : ?>



This is surrounded, either by style rules or a table cells, so how does it work.

I have amended the default template to remove the tables and end up with all the latest news articles in one column. Everything else looks fine.

Love to know what is going on here
