Moderator note: links updated to joomla.org.

Moderator note: WIP = Work in Progress

We are attempting to identify all the problems caused the limitations of the current Itemid system in Joomla 1.0/Mambo 4.5.x. and to document workarounds.
- It causes problems with linking.
- It causes problems with menu systems.
- It causes problems with advanced SEF components.
- It causes problems with SEO due to duplicate links.

The goal is to clarify the specific problems in user terms, and create/document workarounds understandable by all Joomla users of all levels of expertise.

A number of people are struggling with issues relating to the assigment of incorrect Itemid.  It seems that it's a fundamental problem with the core code (see http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,3509.0.html)  but I can't find an FAQ on the topic.  I can't really start a new FAQ since that thread requests that you also provide an answer to the question and I have no clue what that answer is other than waiting for dev to fix the issue in a new joomla release.

I have however found several posts from the last few days that deal with the issue of incorrect Itemid and they include some suggestions for workarounds, hacks or patches (see list below).  You may have to look at several suggestions since the specific workarounds, hack or patch seems to depend on whether you're having the issue in the main body or one of the modules and if it's a module it depends on which module.

It is a known fact that none of these forum urls work as this thread was started before joomla was created, and we had OSM forums at that time.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Please replace the word "opensourcematters" with "joomla" in the urls.
