How to update PHP 5.2.17 to 5.3.04

I am trying to install Akeeba Backup to backup my Joomla site but it requires minimum PHP 5.3.04. How do I update?

Hi there!

Your installation is on local or remote server?
If you are in local, what setup you use (MAMP, XAMP, etc...)?

If you are in remote, your Cpanel o similar have an option for php, in this you can find php versión, just select the new one and it´s done!

I'm using a remote site. After further review, my host stats shows it's using PHP 5.4.24 but my Joomla Systems Info shows 5.2.17. How does that work? Little disclaimer, I'm VERY new to using Joomla so please for give my ignorance.

Akeeba has version that work on the older php see https://www.akeebabackup.com/compatibility.html
