Storing files accessible from y site outside of the site dir

Hi,
For backup reasons, I would like to store some files (.doc, .pdf....) outside of my site directory, for exemple for docman and fireboard components.
For example, if I have /srv/.../all/mysite today, could I upload files in "mydocs" if the path to "mydocs" is /srv/.../all/mydocs.
Question : is it possible to do this (supposing that I can modify the upload path of the components) and what kind of problem could it raise?
