Page Hit Counter Question

I was wondering this for a while but exactly how does the page hit counter function in Joomla? Where is the php code located that controls this?

Whenever someone refreshes an article page, the hit counter goes up by 100+ hits. When I edit an article and hit save, the article count goes up by 20+.

ALWAYS BACKUP FILES BEFORE REPLACING THEM!
Usually on around 3PM-10PM Mon-Thurs (-8 GMT) and random times on weekends.
