Does anyone know why the search results no longer open on a new page.
And what can we do about it?

it is not standard phpbb to open a new page. try right click - new tab,,,,,

I'm assuming you mean the search results on your site and not on these forums?
If so, I just looked at the Search module on my test Joomla site and don't see a parameter for opening the results in a new page.
It looks like there are a few search extensions on the JED that might do what you are looking for:
