I'm new to Joomla - coming over from ExpressionEngine in the hopes of finding an open-source-replacement for that system.

From the little research I've done, it looks like 1.5 + K2 would be the perfect combination for a couple of sites I'm about to build. My concerns with this setup are:

* 1.6 appears to have many of the features of K2 as 'core' components
* K2 is, in many ways, a replacement for a lot of Joomla's core components, and thus may not be 100% forward compatible
* K2 prevents full compatibility with many third-party extensions

So what is a new Joomla user to do? Wait it out for 1.6? Build a site with 1.5 (sans all the great features found in K2 like nested categories, tags and comments)...?

Advice is greatly appreciated!

My answer to your situation is timing. When do you need these sites up and running? If you need the sites to be up in short order than you'll have to proceed with 1.5 and K2 and decide if it's worth upgrading the site to 1.6 and its architecture. Keep in mind that there are pleny of 1.0 sites still running so you don't HAVE to upgrade the 1.5 site.

Otherwise, you might patiently wait for 1.6's release. Personally, I'm putting a project on hold waiting for 1.6 so I don't have to use K2. But every situation is different such as pressure from a client.

btw - I also use ExpressionEngine for another project. It's a nice system for those wanting to pay for a CMS.

And another btw - Welcome to Joomla!

Timing on one isn't an issue - happy to wait. Timing on the other is a bit more sensitive, so I'll have to see how it goes I guess. Also - I'm not sure I want to 'learn' K2 + 1.5 just for one site, if I'm just going to use 1.6 for future sites...hmmmm...

Anyway - I LOVE Expression Engine. Happy to pay for it for what it gives me. But I'm not a visual person - so getting a site to look 'good' is a real challenge. RocketTheme, JoomlaShack, et al make it REALLY easy for me to have a really nice looking site without a lot of work...

At least that's my hope. ;-)
