Virtuemart - How to add an item to a product

I've got a virtuemart shop made before, and you can add items to existing products like adding 9", 12" etc to a pizza product on the bottom of the product status page. However I don't get the option to add an item to a product when I make one. Why is this? And how can I add an item to a product?
