Unable to log in to admin control panel site content compro

Hello,

Our site content has been compromised and we need to take down the website, correct the content, and then put it back up with additional safeguards. Issue is that we cannot log into the control panel. With correct user name and password, we receive a 500 error. We only have FTP access. Can you assist?

Joomla 1.5 is now over 2 years outdated and is quite vulnerable so there is just about nothing you can do to 'safeguard' against hacks.

Via FTP, you need to check the file structure to ensure all required files are in place. You could also upload and overwrite with an original 1.5 package. There may be malicious files in directories that must be removed. Commonly abused directories are:
- images
- images/stories
- cache
- logs
- tmp

Look for .php files in those directories and delete any found.

If the file overwrite restores the site, you must begin the process of migration to Joomla 3.3
