I just installed Joomla! and I did not worry about the one error I received which was "configuration.php file not writable."

However, I did not read that I needed to get the code from step 7 and I deleted the installation file.

Should I just wipe the slate clean and re-install?

Thanks!

No need to take the load of a lorry!! :D

Just goto your FTP manager and change the permissions of configuration.php file..
It means , CHMOD to 777.

READ-WRITE-EXECUTABLE

Then edit that file again and put the contents in it,what you were provided at the last step of installation..
After its done, change it back to 644 or 444 and also delete the Installation folder..
Hope,it helped...

I already deleted the Joola directory and re-installed, this time I uploaded a blank configuration.php file created on BBEdit and changed the permissions to 666. The installation seemed to go fine after that. Does this all sound OK?

777 is not only read write executable it also provides those permissions to the owner group and others. So anyone who has access to the server (legitimate or otherwise) can read, write, and execute code within the file/directories to which this level is set. Potentially dangerous.

I have been using 666 as the permissions for the file since it Joomla asked for the file to be writable not executable. Should I change it to something else once the installation is done? And should I have used 777 during the installation?

Thanks!

Hi, I think I am having more than one issue with the installation. One problem at a time. First i am not experienced with writing code. On the Pre-Installation Check, it says the configuration.php is not writable. I am unable to advance beyond Step 4 Data Base Configuration. I fill in the information as provided by the host and then get an error message, "Unable to connect to the database:Could not connect to MySQL." Thinking that the problem is because the config.php is not writable. I have copied the configuration.php-dist and renamed it to configuration.php. When this file is uploaded, the Joomla installer says to remove the installation folder. When the folder is removed, the installer errors. This leads me to believe that i have not been provided accurate information for the database configuration. Any help that can be provided will be appreciated. thank you.

While installing, do not use a password for the database. If it solves the problem, letter u can use a password for ur database and change ur configuration.php.

This obviously is not a problem related with CHMODing configuration.php file.

Since you're new to Joomla, try local first using XAMPP or WAMP. If you succeed then go remote.

There could be other ways. I did in this simple way, I activated my ftp server in global configuration file with my server address and password.

FTP Settings
Enable FTP Yes
FTP Host Already there
FTP Port Already there
FTP Username Yours (that which you fill in Filezilla)
FTP Password Yours
FTP Root /

In case anyone finds this thread by searching--

Let me reiterate that almost all the problems I've had with installations and with template installations/runtimes has been when someone (including me) has forgotten to make sure that suPHP is enabled (for the entire website).

On some Linux installations this is _not_ enabled by default when a website is created, so you MUST check to verify that it's enabled before trying to install Joomla, and it must be enabled whenever you use the administrator panel for updating values or installing other pieces. (In fact, it's best to enable it and leave it set. If you have a Linux app that won't run if it's set [like squirrelmail], find an alternative to that app, and let Joomla run as it's been written to run!)

Had the "not-writable" issue with the configuration.php file. Initially, had to change permissions to 777 for file changes and then change back to 775, which was a pain.

What I ended up doing is changing the group owner of the file to the "nobody" user, and now the file is writable with 775 as the file permission.

Hope that helps.

I encountered this same problem. The bug was my configuration.php file which somehow got the wrong host address. I simply had to change it to "127.0.0.1" and suddenly everything worked again. Hope that helps.
