Enabling gmail to send emails (tutorial)
I wasn't sure where to put this, but I am sure someone will find it helpful.
Here are the proper settings to use gmail as your email server. (refer to the screenshot that is attached.)
1. Go to global configuration and select server
We will be changing a few options in the "Mail Settings" section.
2. Set "Mailer" to SMTP Server.
3. "Mail From" will be [email protected].
4. Set "From Name" to whatever you want. Mine is currently "Test Site".
5. "Sendmail Path" requires no changes.
6. Set "SMTP Authentication" to yes.
7. "SMTP Username" will again be [email protected].
8. "SMTP Password" will be yourpassword
9. "SMTP Host" is gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com
With these settings you should be able to successfully send emails via your gmail account through the various applications that Joomla uses. (example: Contact forms. registeration).
Hopefully someone will find this useful.

Nice, simple tutorial which should be beneficial to a lot of people out there. I've used this as an addition to my Joomla Tips and Tricks section of my website (linked below).

Re: Enabling gmail to send emails (tutorial)
Hi, thanks for the info.
I tried this but it doesn't works for me. I got a "SMTP Error! Could not connect to SMTP host." message.
Have you tried this? Did it worked on your Joomla installation?
Weird thing is that I saw some threads about hacks to the core Joomla needed to use gmail accounts, because gmail uses SSL for authentication not the standard SMTP port. Am I missing some details?
I'll keep trying to get any mail account to work, thanks!

Now I have the problem of not getting the copy of the mail sent using the contact form but this is another question. Thanks!
