I have searched this forum and have been unable to find the answer to my problem. So, here is my post.

Using windows 7.

Installed XAMPP no problem, get the splash screen when I go to http://localhost.
Unpacked joomla ZIP files into c:\XAMPP\htdocs\joomla15
Following along with the quick start guide I click on the link that is supposed to take you to the install page. I am taken to an index page that apparently has no files. Here is the cut and paste.

Index of /joomla15
[ICO] Name Last modified Size Description
[DIR] Parent Directory -
Apache/2.2.12 (Win32) DAV/2 mod_ssl/2.2.12 OpenSSL/0.9.8k mod_autoindex_color PHP/5.3.0 mod_perl/2.0.4 Perl/v5.10.0 Server at localhost Port 80

I have no idea where to go from here. Have been at it for hours already and can get nothing. Can anyone help?

I believe that Apache and MySQL are running.

Are you typing localhost/joomla15 in your browser's address space?

Yes.

I think the page files that are supposed to be coming up are there under htdocs. It is as if the computer is looking in the wrong place. eg. why does it assume xampp when I type http://localhost ? There are two directories in htdocs, xampp and joomla yet it always goes to xampp. Maybe that has something to do with it? Either way, if I type http://localhost I get http://localhost/xampp/ and it shows the XXAMP for Windows page.

Just an idea.
First of all make sure your machine is disconnected from the Internet.
It is not safe to be connected with XAMPP's default install.
Read your XAMPP's readme file to spot any differences with your installation.
Follow the directions to stop Apache.
Look for the folder where the Apache files are stored.
Look for and make a copy of httpd.conf.
Once you have this file as a backup in a USB pen or in any other place of your choice,
launch Notepad and open httpd.conf. Do not change anything just yet. Look for the lines where
Apache points to the web files that will be served. You may be able to spot where the mistake lies.
If you do, change that line and save the file. Restart the machine and restart Apache, see if that works.
