Using powermac g5, mamp. bought joomla book by visual quickstart. trying the install. downloaded the zip file. unzipped the file in htdocs. renamed the folder to mywebserver. go to browser and type http://localhost/mywebserver and get URL not found. What is the deal? What did I do? I thought it was pretty straight forward.

You have placed the Joomla files in the root folder, if you wish to install Joomla in the mywebserver folder then you need to place the files there.

I renamed the file joomla_1.5.15-stable-full_package to mywebserver as stated in the instructions in the book. Then it says to type http://localhost/mywebserver in the address bar and the installer will start. no such luck.

I think the instructions meant you to extract the file joomla_1.5.15-stable-full_package.zip to your httdocs folder then rename the folder that it creates, "joomla_1.5.15-stable-full_package" to mywebserver. Be sure of your spelling, try copying the folder name and pasting it into your browser address bar after http://localhost/

So the answer was that I needed to type http://localhost:8888/mywebserver.

That's great that you found the problem. Do you know why your server was using the 8888 port number rather then the standard port 80? Was there something in the instructions that suggested you change the port number, or was it that another program was using port number 80 already and did Apache or Mamp change the port number on its own?
