[Solved]Manually installing components on Joomla 1.5

Post by itspecialist » Mon Oct 18, 2010 7:26 am

So I searched over Joomla and Google and this is what I've found out: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=344333

However, it can only be applied to Joomla 1.0 version. However after that discovery, I did the following:

>Download and extract the component extension into my local harddrive.
>FTP the directory folder to public_html/components

And then I tried going to my website's component admin panel and nothing showed up. How do I fix this?

P.S. I'm using [url banned].com which somehow is pretty lame at allowing me to install extensions and plugins via Joomla's admin panel. Pretty strict I think for being a free webhosting provider. So I've managed to install Joomla, the template and modules manually but not for a component. Anyone?

Edit: Nevermind. I just changed hosting server. Reduces my headache on the needless manual installation. Thanks though, enbee. I'll just mark this as solved.

You can manually install Joomla extensions on Joomla! 1.5. In fact this is the "normal" method for me since the server I have been working doesnot allow automatic installation using Joomla Installer, for some reasons.

Basically you can install any extension by copying the files to the appropriate folders (or directories), creating the database tables, and to populate data as necessary. However, I will not recommend it to anyone unless you have to.

It looks to me that manuall installation of extensions is more or less similar to manual installation of Joomla, which is as an alternative method of Joomla installation. (the less easy way, http://help.joomla.org/content/view/1944/302/ )

Alternatively, you can install a Joomla extension using "INSTALL From Directory" method, from the admin panel. This way you upload (FTP) the unpacked files to a directory outside Joomla directory and install it from there. But you can not directly FTP the files inside the joomla directory (such as 'components'), this will cause error.
>FTP the directory folder to public_html/components
It has been discussed somehow on: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=470&t=555934
