Have you tried uploading a new set of Joomla files, you may have a corrupt file. This can happen when FTP'ing the files to the server sometimes. What version of php is running on your site?

Then your php version shouldn't be the problem.

ok making some progress. Not knowing php can someone tell me how to make the file writeable? This is what I got when we started the install.

PHP Version >= 4.3.10 Yes
- Zlib Compression Support Yes
- XML Support Yes
- MySQL Support Yes
MB Language is Default Yes
MB String Overload Off Yes
configuration.php Writable No You can still continue the installation as the configuration settings will be displayed at the end. You will have to manually upload the code. Click in the text area to highlight all of the code and then paste into a new text file. Name this file 'configuration.php' and upload it to your site root folder.

You can continue with the install, you will need to save the configuration information it gives you at the end of the install and edit the configuration.php-dist, adding the info to it. You then need to rename the configuration.php-dist to configuration.php and place it on your site in the same place the original file was.

If you check your site and find a configuration.php file there already try changing its permissions to 777 and see if rechecking with the install shows the file as writable. If it does then after the install is finished and you have removed the "installation" folder reset the configuration.php file's permissions to 644.
