Do I HAVE to use only a 1.5 templates or can I still use a 1.7 or higher template even though my ISP says they only support 1.5.22 as the version they know to be stable? I'm new to Joomla and to me this is turning into quite a difficult project. I have a website already hosted want to KEEP that current site up and working until I can get a new site up and going with Joomla. I've set up MAMP but so far I haven't downloaded a template until I can figure out the server issue question. My host only has support for 1.5.22 and all the templates the client likes are 1.7 and higher so do I just use the 1.5 template that the host suggests or should I intall or try to upgrade what the hosting server is running so I can use a newer template? I have no idea how to proceed. I read online that 1.5 is only supported thru the end of this month so I don't want to download a 1.5 template, do work to it and then have it now work properly in a month or so. I'm so new to this and so confused about how to even start.

Just because the host only supports the Joomla! 1,5 software does not mean you cannot install 1.7.x or 2.5.x provided the server is able to handle these.
Find out what the versions of Apache, MySQL and PHP on the server are and compare these with the technical requirements for Joomla!
