Is it possible to host multiple joomla sites (all radically different from each other) on the same server? One site is a real estate company, one is an attorney, one is a job site, one is for dating.....and so on......

Has anyone done this successfully?

Yes it is very straight forward to do.

Simply place a separate directory in your Web root directory for each site and install Joomla! in each folder making sure that the URL for each site points to that directory. Some hosts have this function automated and built in to their own control panels - otherwise you would need to use the Apache Mod_Rewrite rules in an .htaccess file (if you do not have direct access to the Apache httpd.conf file).

As for the database, you can either run all the sites from one database simply using alternative table prefixes or using separate databases for each site.

In the well made Joomla 1.5 installation video at http://www.videotutorialzone.com/conten ... -iis6.html , the author states (at 2:49 in the video) that you need to set a variable in php.ini called session.save_path to a folder that he places inside his root directory.

Will a single session.save_path folder serve all instances of all databases for each joomla installation? If so, can this path be somewhere else - like a central location instead of inside the directory structure of one of the sites on the server?

It certainly should do, my own host seemingly does this and it is the same on localhost installations, just put the /tmp (or possibly /temp on IIS) in the Web root directory.

I'll test it out over the next 2 days and post back my results.

Thanks for your help!

A single "session.save_path" location is indeed sufficient for all Joomla instances on a single server.

If your server is especially active (say =>500 simultaneous users) you may want to read the ini file's instructions around this setting and make adjustments needed if you run into problems with too many files in a folder. Other than that, Thundercats are go!

I have a single server site at 1and1.com. My 3 sites are all subdirectories off the main. If you go to the site it actually redirects to the directory its under.

Id like to try learning Joomla 2.5, so would I install it in each directory as I go?

3 sites are

www.w7psk.net
www.scotts-home.net
www.everettfaithlutheran.com

Id like to bring these out of the 80s into the new era with Joomla. Im a total rookie newbie so It would be nice if I had assistance but the local Joomla club seems to be full of people that do this for a living and want to charge for help.

I live in Everett, Washington.
