Install a localhost server and experiment on that first.
Make sure you have both the Web site and the database data files as otherwise it will not work.
Read the support documentation at http://docs.joomla.org/beginners to get an idea of how it all works.

Try installing a new copy of Joomla 1.5 to get a feel for it. See the 1.5 Installation Guide.
Then overwrite the site files of one of your practice sites with a copy of the back up site and import a copy of the database into the database on your local site.

CAUTION. Do not include the back up copies of the configuration.php or any .htaccess file in this process, as you will want to keep your local copies for now.

hello again
please read my earlier messages

i thought i´d let you know on my progress

well

i did like you wrote and overwrote the the files of the website, except for
configuration.php
htaccess.txt
configuration.php-dist

the last one i am not sure about if should have overwritten it or not...

before that i have managed to understand the the database file should be a file with
.sql Suffix, please correct me if am wrong.

and the only files with .sql files i could find in the back up, are these two

\administrator\components\com_qcontacts\install.sql
\administrator\components\com_qcontacts\install.nonutf8.sql

and non of them seems to be the backup database
1. because of their location
2. because of their size, 1.31 kb and 1.35 kb

before i tried to install install.sql as database

i was getting this message when trying to open the page

No configuration file found and no installation code available. Exiting...

so i did try to install install.sql as database

that did not change anything and i got the same message

No configuration file found and no installation code available. Exiting...

next i tried to overwrite this file

configuration.php-dist

using the file from the backup

that did not change anything either

i would be glad if you let me know if i m doing something wrong , or a database backup was not really made
and there for it would be impossible to recover from that backup

by the way, when i try to get into the administrator page, he sends me with an error to host page.

many thanks
itai

configuration.php-dist is only an example file and not a production file.
If you only have the back up of the web files that you have described then you do not have a backup of the database of the original site.
