I have an existing site, running Joomla 1.5.26
Also PHP: 5.2.5
SQL: sorry cant recall

The server has the other day been upgraded to:
PHP: 5.3.13
SQL: 5.5.22-cli

and now I get an error
Code:
Warning: trim() expects parameter 1 to be string, array given in /home/XXXXXXXX/public_html/libraries/joomla/html/parameter.php on line 83
Version 1.5.26

I have looked through this forum, and the general web, - it seems an issue with various CMS, Not just Joomla.

The fixes have been listed as editing Joomla core files right through to downgrtading from PHP 5.3.8 to php 5.3.6
I cant edit the core files (bad mojo!) and was prepared to ask the host to downgrade my PHP from 5.3.8. to 5.3.6 - until I realised I was on 5.3.13 - The bug could have not been around that long and not fixed so please advise as to what I should do?

Marty

It would seem to be a server misconfiguration due to the upgrade by the host. Clearly the site was working before the upgrade and this is not (as you rightly suggest) something to be dealt with by editing Joomla to mask the error.

Please run the Forum post Assistant to provide the information to help us try and resolve the issue.

However I would point out that the string to array in the warning is an issue currently in PHP5.4.x and yes they do last that long when they have been covered up/worked around for a period of time which is what seems to have happened in this case.

This is the first instance I am aware of the issue arising for Joomla in any version of PHP 5.3.x, certainly not for 2.5.4 as the advice generally is for people to roll back to the 5.3.x series.

I did run the FPA just wasn't sure where to post it as its sort of public here, or does that not really matter?

That is why it is called the Forum Post Assistant. :)
It does not include any security details.
Just delete the PHP file from your site once finished with it.
Suggest you might want to copy and paste the code into a text file so that if you need to present the same information again for another issue you can do so easily.
If you add more and more Extensions to the site or the server configuration changes than you would need to re-run the file anyway at that time - but still delete it after each occasion.

When does this error occur?

I have 5.3.13 running perfectly well locally without any issues, however it may be a combination of the extensions that have been installed together with other server configuration settings combining to make this an issue.

BTW: for the record, this is a PHP error that has been highlighted in the work that PHP developers have been doing to try and fix the bug in 5.4.x where it has first become apparent in a significant way.

You can turn off the FTP layer in Joomla. Your host runs SUPhP and you do not need this work-around.

These values (Max. Upload Size: 2M | Max. POST Size: 8M) are small and you will not be able to install extensions larger than 2M.

You got this error in an attempt to read the Parameters from an Extension.
