I am trying to install Joomla 1.5.26 on my mac running Lion. I have successfully loaded MAMP, and have followed a couple tutorials regarding the best way to install Joomla. All went well until I tried to set up the database. The error message came back that it couldn't access MySQL. I've uninstalled and reinstalled 6 times and still the same message. I know it is possible, but at this point I'm totally lost. Please help if you can.

George :(

Welcome to Joomla forum!

When you start MAMP, can you access phpMyAdmin (a webinterface to a MySQL database)?
Does it work ok?
Can you create a database in phpMyAdmin?
Can you use that database with the installation of Joomla?
Did you use database username "root" and database password "root", or something else if you choose another database password during the installation of MAMP?

Thank you for your quick reply.
The green lights are on for Apache and MySQL servers. I created a database in phyMyAdmin and used a different username from "root" and d.b. p'word than "root". The tutorials I followed said that was ok to do. All seems to work ok until I get to the point where I want to connect to the MySQL database.

I was able to connect to the d.b. by using "root", "root" for the user name and p'word. I found that solution in a reply to a post from a year or so ago. Thanks again.
