Has anyone done this or is doing it?  It's great for newsletters, uses phpMailer, is open source, and would be really good to have integrated.

To what extent do you wish Joomla and phpList to be integrated?

Post subject:  Re: Integration of phpList anyone?

For me, I would like to have phpList as integrated as possible, with all phpList pages generated as Joomla pages and the sign-up form in a module.  I would prefer the phpList tables to be included in the Joomla database, but that is a "nice to have but not strictly necessary" thing for me.  There does not need to be any integration of the users for my purposes.  I would prefer the users of the cms to be seperate to the users who register for newsletters.  Mail lists should always be opt-in anyway.  The management of the list should be from the admin interface.
There you go - my wishlist :)

Joomla already has a mail list component whats the pros/cons of using it vs phplist ? seems like it does almost the same

From what I understand, though I may be mistaken, none of the mailing list programs for Joomla! handle bounces automatically and they do not have the flexibility that phplist has for being able to filter and mail to a group of people using a unique filter, such as "people who have dogs" etc. which would be based on a form field. I would be very happy to discover that I am mistaken!

As far as integration, I am concerned with integrating the mailing list user database with my Joomla! user database...perhaps working directly with the Joomla! users or with Community Builder.

Yes this is the holy grail of mailing list integrations. If it were to work with community builder I would achieve Joomla-nirvana.

Joomvirna.  ;D

Perhaps the new userbot in the upcoming release of Joomla 1.1 will make it easier to integrate a script like phpList. Integration with a stand-alone PHP / mySQL script is currently a very daunting task. The new phpBB and LDAP userbots should be used as models for creating such integrations in the future.

Hi!

I´ve been using PHPlist for 2 years now and is great, it is the only mailing list manager that I know that can handle +30.000 users.

My only problem is that people has to register both in Mambo and in PHPlist. I would like to be able to register a user in Mambo and ask him in the same com_registration window if he/she wants to receive mail from the site using a checkbox widget.

this amount of integration would be enough for me and many others but implies sending two forms at once. Does anyone knows how to do this?

Regards

There is no API available for PHPlist...yet. There has been discussion about the beginnings of an API and the SOAP protocol on the developer discussion list in the past few weeks. Things could open up there quickly from what I can tell.

You can read the emails between the developers here:

See the thread called: Web Service Interface to PHPList

It's already been done.  It doesn't utilize phplist's API (still not integrated :) ), or Joomla 1.5's developer features. It's also not open-source, or free.  I haven't tried it out:

Looking at it, I don't think it is what I am after. I am looking for a way to be able to offer users the option of signing up for a newsletter/announcements, whereas this bridge appears to synch the users.  If anyone does buy it and try it out I would be interested to know how it handles the opt-in, opt-out nature of phpList.  Anyone that just pulls every Joomla registered user into phpList and sends emails to them runs the risk of being accused of spamming I would think.

I don't think you're running risk of spam, as long as the same entity manages both lists of email addresses and users, and of course you abide by all the laws about it, by providing double opt in and easy opt out, and ensuring that they work correctly.

Post subject:  Re: Integration of phpList anyone?

I've pretty much given up trying to use any of the downloadable Joomla newsletter modules / components, and installed phplist myself. It's powerfull. Much more powerfull.

I just wish I could somehow integrate it into my Joomla site, in such a way that when a user subscribes to a newsletter, he automatically get's subscribed to my Joomla as well. And if, somehow, I don't know how, he can get subscribed to SMF as well.

Thus, if it's possible:
  • If a user subscribes to Joomla, he automatically get's subscribed to SMF, and he has an option to gets newsletters also - OR
  • When a user signs up for a newsletter, he automatically get's subscribed to joomla, and SMF - OR
  • When a user registers on the SMF forum, he has an option to get a newsletter, and he automatically gets subscribed to Joomla as well

Can this be done? And it's rather important, to somehow or another keep the SMF & Joomla usernames & password sync'ed. If anybody have figured this one out, please let me know .....

I know that this thread was out-of-date. but for your information, I've built a new solution for Joomla + phplist. I'm documenting and going to publish on the next week.
I hope this will be useful for the community.

I'm definitely interested. Please post a link to this thread when your component is released. I'd be interested to know the level of integration and for what version of Joomla this extension is written.

There are some on Mailing & Distribution Lists on JED that you can use to integrate phplist with Joomla.
