I upgraded from 1.5.6 to 1.57 using a mac. I unarchived the update package and uploaded the files using cyberduck. A Mac creates a "." version of each file --> unarchiving zip that holds 'thisfile.jpg' unpacks two files 'thisfile.jpg' and .thisfile.jpg'. SO this might be relevant to some (not to me, no idea if it does anything with the joomla system'

Following errors.:
In Global Configuration I get errors in each of the tabs (site, system, server) something like:
Mac OS X 2ATTR;**com.apple.quarantine0000;48db55f9;Firefox;|org.mozilla.firefoxThis resource fork intentionally left blank

in "Install/Uninstall", in modules, plugins and components following error:
"XML Parsing Error at 1:1. Error 4: Empty document"

Possibly not an error, but weird enough to post.:
When I e.g. try to log in and e.g. enter a wrong password I get the error message but on a blue background. I use the Ja_purity template (not fully updated since I made some core changes to it and they would be lost).

It looks like something has done something weird along the way. I would suggest using the command line tools to extract the files as this doesn't change the file and using command line tools to upload the files. Alternatively something in Cyberduck may have caused some errors as well trying to maintain resource forks or extended attributes. It looks like there is something weird happening with either the resource forks and/or the extended attributes. com.apple.quarantine is a marker for a downloaded file on Mac OS X 10.5 systems so something is obviously getting confused, though typically Mac OS X shouldn't create those extra files when its on a natively supported EA/forked filesystem (e.g. HFS+) so something weird is happening.

Well, it appeared to be indeed the mac specific issue. I deleted (manually which is great fun ehum) all the "dot files" and logged in again. And all error messages were gone.

So this is resolved.

Possible explanation: when cyberduck is uploading it might create temp files "dot files" and upload those along with the real one. So maybe cyberduck itself is not the best solution for updating (will try filezilla or fugu). Why graphic thingie: command line still sounds scary to me.
If those do not work: command line it is.
