Hi All.

I am running RC3 with nightly download of 17th December.

Could someone tell me if it is OK for me to just upgrade to the latest nightly build or do I have to install RC4 first and then load the nightly.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Clive

Hi Clive,

Is it a clean install, so no extensions?

Hi there :)

I have no extensions and am using the default milky way template.. I just have a couple of minor edits in the html via admin to change the text at the footer in the powered by.. and my way of upgrading resets the template to defaults so I just have to change them back from admin...

I normally just load up the nightly to a new directory then copy over the config and images directory from the live site. Delete the install directory and then change the new directory to the live site name and change the old one websiteOLD.

That way if anything goes wrong I can flip back to the older version by the change of a directory name...After testing I delete websiteOLD

My nightly install was only a few days before RC4 release so i already have the database changes done...

Clive

Sounds like a solid method to me, it's about the same as I would do. All you need to make sure of, is that you have a clean set of files, nothing old left from a previous release/build, and your method takes care of that.

Thanks for the advice.. :)

I have just upgraded directly to the RC 4 nightly build of 13th of January from RC 3  17th December by using the method I explained above and all is working fine...

Of course my method only works if you keep up with the nightly's and don't let those database changes become left behind..

One last question... Given that I delete the images directory and copy that to the new install.. Is there anything in the images directory that could be seen as "left over" from an older version?

Clive

Hi Clive,

Thats a negative on the image, they won't cause you any problems. Nothing changing there anyway, not that I know of.

Would Wilside's method work to create a fresh 1.5 stable (Hoorah!)

1. Create new directory and install 1.5 stable (Hoorah!!)

2. Copy config and image files to new directory

3. Rename old site directory /example_old

4. Rename new directory /example

5. connect to database

Questions:

Is the order of steps listed correct?
Where do I find official 1.4/1.5 database change instructions? (I am confused by all the posts on the subject)

Hi Frank and all,

Not sure what you mean in your step 5? If you have the config from your older version then the database will already be connected.

The way I do has never caused an error right from RC1 but I do a nightly around once a week with this method as well and make the database changes as and when they come. My last upgrade was from a nightly two days before the RC4 release so there were hardly any changes anyway. (Not like jumping from Beta to RC4 or something)

I also have no addons, extensions so that helps...

I am going to upgrade later today and will post to let you know the results..

Hi all. 20 minutes to upgrade to stable version from RC4 using cpanel and filezilla

My install is in a sub folder of my domain

upload zip to server and unpack in new directory domain/joomlainstallNEW
Delete images, installation directories
Delete the zip file and install file
Delete the unaltered config file
Rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess

copy images directory from domain/joomlainstall to domain/joomlainstallNEW
copy config fie from domain to domainNEW

Navigate to domain/joomlainstallNEW just to check its there

Using filezilla change directory domain/joomlainstall to domain/joomlainstallOLD
Using filezilla change directory domain/joomlainstallNEW to domain/joomlainstall

I then have to upload an image to the default template (rhuk milkyway) and add a slightly different footer text in the powered by footer by editing the html of the template from admin. I also set the width to medium and colour back to blue background and green for the front.

Using cpanel delete the directory domain/joomlainstallOLD

As far as i am aware there is nothing in the images director that can be considered left behind from older versions...

If anything goes wrong you can just change the directory names back to revert to your earlier version. Also the deleted directory is in the trash bin in cpanel so it could be put back from there as well if there are problems...

Thank you to all at Joomla! for this amazing system that allows me to create my website... I haven't even gone in to 10 percent of what it can do yet.... :)

This is great! I am testing everything on a test site. This method worked perfectly. Thanks Wildside and RonInk. -- Frank
