Error loading feed data - BUG?
(I posted this in another part of the forum in answer to another persons similar issue and though several of us have this problem we have received no help there. Hopefully this will not be considered cross-posting... we need resolution to the issue.)
I used cPanel to upload and install the Joomla_1.5.0_to_1.5.2-Stable-Patch_Package.tar.gz patch and followed the instructions.
After upgrading my test site (on my PC) all went fine but when I applied the patch to my live site I received the error loading feed data pink error banner across the top of my frontpage. Prior to the upgrade I had no problem with the feed display module.
I found a stop-gap temporary fix that at least has removed the pink "error loading feed data" banner from my pages. In the back end I went to Extensions --> Module Manager and Disabled the Feed Display. This does not repair the problem... just puts a band-aid on it.
I hope someone knows the cause and the cure.

Re: Error loading feed data - SOLVED
I solved my problem.
It appears to be a Joomla! Cache thing.
With Extensions --> Module Manager --> Newsflash enabled and System - Cache disabled the error persists and when System - Cache is enabled the pink Error loading feed data banner message is gone.

Re: Error loading feed data - BUG?
Hi Guys,
When I go to Extensions>Module Manager, both under the 'Site' and 'Administrator' tab, i don't have a News Flash or News Feed module.
Should there be one in there?
Thanks

I wish I could help more, adhoy. The steps I listed worked for me. Any problems must be due to Joomla and the particular extentions used ?adhoy wrote: It still appears

Joomla is very strange to me... solutions may work for some people but not for all.
Very sorry not to be able to help you more.

Re: Error loading feed data - BUG?
This is a bug in the feed module (I think).
Is you don't use it, just uninstall the feed module and the message will go away.
Disabling the module doesn't seem to work every time :
Administrator > Extensions > Install/Uninstall > Modules > mod_feed > Uninstall
Hopefully someone will find the problem in mod_feed and fix it.

mod_feed is only required if you want to pull RSS feeds into your site.

Re: Error loading feed data - BUG?
I deleted mod_feed - the ERROR LOADING FEED DATA did not go away. I then enabled caching, and it's still there. I also deleted the syndication mod. That didn't help, either.

Re: Error loading feed data - BUG?
it's not a bug, you just need to disable the 'Joomla! Security Newsfeed' module
Extensions=>Module Manager=>'Administrator' tab and
disable 'Joomla! Security Newsfeed' module.
Becsuse this module load feed data with link http://feeds.joomla.org/JoomlaSecurityNews,
this link is broken, so it pop up a error loading feed data error.
Good Luck.

Re: Error loading feed data - BUG?
Some caution needs to be exercised here. On a local test site where one is working offline primarily, then disabling the back-end feed module is fine. However, on a production site which would be online practically full time then the error should not appear thus negating the need to suppress the error. The feed was enabled by default to serve a vital purpose - to provide security alerts. So it important that you do not compromise your site's security by disabling the module unnecessarily.
Freedom of expression ... some may try to suppress it but they can never take it away ...

Re: Error loading feed data - BUG?
It will happen if you can't get to the feed for what ever reason. This can be internal firewalls that prevent access or other items such as GoDaddy which prevent external HTTP requests

pasamio,
I'm not clear on "items such as GoDaddy which prevent external HTTP requests". Could you please provide more clarification?

Re: Error loading feed data - BUG?
If I remember correctly, to get out of GoDaddy's server infrastructure you need to configure a proxy to handle external HTTP requests, direct requests don't work. This is why there is a specific GoDaddy GMail auth plugin that has proxy server settings:
http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/gdgmail
Joomla! needs a global proxy setting functionality which we don't have as of yet (unfortunate) which would resolve the issue in these cases. It is certainly an interesting security perspective from GoDaddy and something whilst perhaps annoying I can see the value in. The same goes for the SMTP which I believe you have stuff for as well.

Re: Error loading feed data - BUG?
Thanks for the feedback! We have indeed dropped the proxy requirement for making outbound requests on port 80 and 443. If there are specific issues and examples not functioning as expected, we can take a look. Just drop me a pm or email with the details. Thanks again!

Re: Error loading feed data - BUG?
Thanks for the help here. My only problem is that in administrator it will not let me click on any of the menu items with this error sitting there (my development PC is offline), the links are not active, however I can click on any of the manager icons on the front administrator page...any ideas?151854140 wrote:it's not a bug, you just need to disable the 'Joomla! Re: Error loading feed data - BUG?
I noticed in the picture you posted of your Admin backend you have the Joomla! Security Newsfeed enabled, have you tried disabling it to see if that gets rid of the loading feed data error message.
