Index page is blank after moving from one server to another!

Hi all, I am hoping for some help on the following as I am pretty new to this and dont have much php and mySQL knowledge.

Problem: I am moving my Joomla 1.5 website from one server to another and did everything required I think. Basically I have double checked everything in the config file to make sure it is all setup for the new server and I have moved all files exactly from one server to the other. However on the new server I just get a blank screen on the index page. The administrator section of the site works fine and no issues there just the index.php page is completed blank.

So when I switch on error reporting and set it to '2048' I get the following strict standards errors/warnings on this index page. Now I am not sure what any of this means as the site is working fine on the old server in terms of not receiving any errors. There is quite a few warnings as you can see (This is about a fifth of them but they relate to the same thing each time). Now I dont mind warnings but nothing onthe home page is actually rendering so obviously something here is causing some issue. Nothing from the previous site has been changed except for the config file of course:

Hello, I just have a similar problem. I have moved my website, and now a blank site appears when I type the address (www.***.org), but the site appears correct when I add an extension at the end of the address (e.g. www.xxx.org/a). The administrator section works fine, and all links work properly after opening the website. I would really appreciate and be grateful for a help.

I have the EXACT same issue, was moved from one server to another (by my host), I swear it worked when I check it after the move. Now, I get the blank page.

I read numerous posts with the exact same issue, but no luck.

My administrator site stilll works, and if I point to the index.php file in my browser it loads the page.

I have run out of suggestions, I submitted a ticket to my host, but I don't think this is an issue for them, this looks like a Joomla! issue.

What I have tried,

Changing templates,
disable SEO & Mod Rewrite
even kicked my PC(not really)

I did upgrade to latest 1.5.13 and still no luck.(this was after I had the issue, in hopes it would save me)
Any suggestions?

If my host resolves this I will post details here.

I just noticed that when I add the www infront of my domain, it works like a charm, so this seems to not be a Joomla! issue, I will check my nameservers in the morning, perhaps that will solve this

Check to see which PHP version you are using. Joomla currently does not support PHP 5.3.

I resolved my goofy mistake. It was because I uploaded an index.html together with the files that I moved. The problem was resolved when I deleted this file. So I suggest you to search for an index.html and delete it if you have one. If there is not an index.html, then I suggest you to try changing global settings<search engine friendly to no and refresh the page.

Do not know what it was, but All is well now. Perhaps It was just a fluke. My host said they could access it and now I can access it from my school. Who knows, I am just glad it works again.

Same prob, i can access admin panel but home page (and others) dont render at all. Have checked i am on php 5.2.3
turned off search friendly url's
testing other php scripts work eg hello world

i migrated this site from a working site on Jommla! 1.5.1, no probs. Then i unpacked all files from 1.5.14 upgrade and uploaded overwiriting original files, updated configuration file, now this blank page problem - no errors are thrown, just nothing coming back out of index.php...

If you can - log in and edit your configuration.php file. look for the entry called "var $error_reporting = '0';". If the value is not '0', then make it so and close file. You should be able to see the page then. The '0' value basically means that Joomla should process errors regardless, and try to render the page. To fix the issue, the higher the value, the more information regarding the errors within the page. The maximum value - I think - is '2048'.

I've found the main reasons for these errors, is incompatible plugins, conflicting php calls from libraries and template module calls.

Any no of reasons can cause the 'Blank White Page'.

Hello aaron,

Once I was struck with the same problem like this, I tried following the code line by line.
I found the problem was the option value for the home page was empty.

For solving it, in administrator side goto main menu and click "default home" menu and choose any other component other than the front page. then try whether is it working in the user side. If it is working revoke the home page menu to frontpage or what ever it is as before.

It did have the home page set as default, i changed it to another page as default and still no good.

i have almost the same problem. I have only changed the directory from www.*.net/new/ to www.*.net. The FrontEnd works fine but the Backend won't login. After login it display the white screen.

is a tip that making repair that "small" problem ?

Earlier i have made the site in local. And when i have upload it to the web hoster. The Front and BackEnd was displaying the blank screen. I have maked the site from zero in the /new/ folder. It worked but when i have changed the directory the problem is with the backend. I can't login.

What is the best way for doing the site in local and to upload it to the web-hoster securely ?

Try running the post assistant on your site, it may find a problem. You could also check your site's PHP and Apache error logs to see if anything was logged. If you can not find them in your Host's control panel check your Host's FAQs for the location.

Cheers the reply, I'll look into that in the morning, I just uploaded a new 1.5.14 install without the sample data and copied and pasted the data for now as the site needs to be live for the morning, but I have the backups, and I'll create the same scanario using the migration tool and see if I get the same issues. If I get it sorted I'll post back

lots of problems along the way, but this is my current roadblock.

Check that you have a default menu and menu item selected in the Menu Manager. Check that you have a Joomla 1.5 template selected. Try selecting a different template to see if it is a template issue. Try disabling modules that display on the home page to see if one of them is the cause.

Just a quick thought - we found the same sort of symptoms on a customer's new hosting platform. Turned out to be that memory limit in php.ini file was set too low for the amount of transaction generated on the server once you took into account all the plugins/modules etc used to render the page. Once we change the shared hosted option (as shown below) from it's default of 8MB to 32MB - no more white blank pages. Test that, as it seems to be a common issue on shared hosted providers in that they minimise the shared memory allocations to the various sites on their boxes.

P.S. you can add this variable to your .htaccess file of your site if your hosting provider won't allow you access, or won't change main php.ini file. Use the following code (results may vary due to individual setups by hosting providers - but is a start for further research if needed)

BTW - to check if your change has been effective with memory limit increase in php settings, goto your Global configuration in Joomla and check under Help >> System Info. Click on PHP Information. Then scroll down to Configuration Section >> PHP Core and look at memory_limit. On the left you will see what if available for use on your installation and on the right of that line you will see what is set for master/main php.ini configuration. In the customer's example above, local setting was 32MB and master setting was 8MB. So we knew that changes we made were working

Good luck with the above, it seems to be a much more common thing these days, so I would recommend starting with looking at memory_limit setting for php, as more modules means more processing server-side, and hosting providers are setting limits to bare-bone setups.

This is the reason why I had to leave the version 5.2.7 of php installed on my system.

Reverting back to the previous configuration, where 5.2.7 was the default for apache...

EDIT: no, it is not due to the template. Actually this problem happens even on a joomla 1.5 fresh install. Joomla 1.6 is not affected by this problem but joomla 1.7 yes.

It seems I have plugin conflicts but I can not find which one is causing.
The fresh installation of Joomla 1.5.23 does not have any issue on Admin Login on the same server.

Strict error reporting started in php5.3, they are not errors but are warnings. Try this to turn them off;
error_reporting(E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE);

or you can set error reporting in your configuration.php file to 6135 to remove notices and strict warnings.

Strict warnings and notices should not break your site but some php errors will.

Try changing the code in your index to the one I posted so you do not see the strict warning messages. The strict warning messages are not your problem, what ever is causing the 500 errors is.

If you are getting 500 errors you should check your servers error logs to see what the errors are. Once you know what the 500 errors are you may have enough info to fix the problem.

About the paths, I would think that would be a problem but you can check under the link in the admin backend for Help/System Info then click on Directory Permissions to see if the folders are writable.

With no admin access you could use the path.php file to see what the correct path to your tmp folder is. Just FTP the file to your site's tmp folder then open the path.php file in your browser to see the correct path. Then edit the path in your configuration.php file. You can change the tmp folder name in the path to logs for the logs folder path.
