How to make a submenu:
http://docs.joomla.org/Tutorial:Creating_a_submenu

And then add the "mod_mainmenu" to "user3"

:o I am also trying to get submenus to drop down from Top Menu items in rhuk_milkyway :( . It works with the template "icons004" but when I change the default to milkyway all the menu items are displayed (see attachment). I thought I had the module correctly organised (see attachment) but it still does not work. Can anyone help ?

Okay simple.

I will tell you step by step.

Extensions -> Modules -> Top Menu -> Always show sub-menu items

Then create your sub-menu by using Roar's link.

Thank you, emckai - sorry I didn't reply before now but Christmas got in the way of development. I follow you up to the point where you talk about Roar's link. Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but can you give me a simple guide on how to create a sub-menu using "Roar's link", please. I am eager to learn!!

Alright.

Administrator Panel -> Extensions -> Modules -> Top Menu -> Tick Always show sub menu

Now

Administrator Panel -> Menus -> Top Menu -> Create a new menu and select the parent menu

Now once you have created the sub menu
it should be something like this

Parent
|-Sub

Thanks, emckai, I have done as you suggested (see attached). All the submenus have parent menus. But, using rhuk_milkyway, all parent and submenus still show as in my previous attachment. If I switch templates to "icons004" the submenus behave perfectly (all neatly hidden away until the cursor passes over the parent). I can only think that the problem with milkyway is in its make up code. Any thoughts, please ?

Hi,
I am working on my first site for a nonprofit. I am trying to us horizontal navigation with submenus in a menu that appears at the top of a template. I started with the default templates like ja_purity but I couldn’t get it to work. I found a free template that does that correctly but it has other problems. I have several books that refer to setting the hornav position. In summary, I want dropdown submenus from the top menu area.

I assume the capability must be barried in the template code. Any suggestions other than finding a new free template?

Thanks!!!

Thanks to all for your help. I solved the problem eventually by using "Superfish" - a very easy menu extension to use - I recommendc it to anyone.

Hi folks, I'm having the same issue as geoffstuderus mentioned. So, I also have done all suggestions. All the submenus have parent menus. But, by using rhuk_milkyway, all parent and submenus still shows always, and they doesn't hide when mousing out or changing the menu. So, I need to make them hide away. I've changed the "top menu" module as suggested above, but it didn't hide them.
I've downloaded the "Superfish" as suggested by geo above, but it creates a new menu in other position and I want my default menu to be used.

Any thoughts, tip, help, how to make the sub-menus hide into rhuk_milkyway theme or how to make the superfish works as the original menus?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.

Hey thanks for the reply. I'll check the links.

Just for share with all, regarding how to place the menu in its default position, I found out that it was as "user3". So, just placing the module as "user3" it was in the wished place. :0)

I've also tried a lot of modules. Some of them give conflict with VirtueMart product slide show making it stops working. Other caused other issues and so on. The tried ones with no success were SuperFish, Ari YUI menu, Art Total Menu light, Art Wijmo Menu, DjMenu, EasyMenu, Zaragoza news tab menu and Zaragoza dropdown menu. The best module that worked in my case with the rhuk_MilkWay theme with no issue was the module HXD Moo Menu. It hasn't CSS compressed and so on making it easier to edit CSS.

I hope this info can help someone else.

This is what I found for help with your template;
http://www.templatemonster.com/help/general-tutorials/jquery/menu/
This page describes using Joomla's Suckerfish to create a drop down menu using the Joomla menu module;

Hi Konstrictorman.
Sorry for late respond.
well, I have added few menus at the bottom page and one menu on top of the search module in home page. Moreover, I could make submenu on top menu like drop down.
Well to add menu to your page there are different ways but the easiest one is :
Note : you have to modify 3 different files on your template
Note: There is a software called Agent Ransack. I bet this software can change your programming world when you work with Joomla and you are looking for specific code line. You can download it free from internet and then just make a copy of your template into your computer and then you can easily search for file names or any specific text that you cannot find it on the template files.

1- Modify templateDetails.xml : you can find it on you template root. Copy the file on your system and then open it. You can find all content position here. Add your new module name if you don’t have it on your list
Like <position>adlinks</position>
2- Modify index.php : you can find it on your template root.
You need to add the module that you defined in previous step. Like the following lines: (Note: Be careful, add codes in the position that you want. For example if you want to have bottom links then add it where you can see the footer module and codes. You probably need to modify the file for few times and test it each time to make sure the new module position in the right place.
<div class="adlinks-class" align="center">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
<jdoc:include type="modules" name="adlinks" style="topmenu" />
</div>
3- Modify template.css: you can find it on CSS folder in template root
Well this part is important. Well, you have to know how to program with CSS.
I customize it based on my requirements
/*---------------------------------addlinkmenu---*/

.adlinks-class{
float: none;
margin-bottom:0;
margin-left: 20.15em;
margin-right:20.15em;
margin-top: 0;
text-align: left;
}

.adlinks-class a:hover{
text-align:center;
padding-bottom:30px;
text-decoration:underline overline;
color:#333;
}
.adlinks-class a:link{
text-decoration:none;
color:#666;

}
.adlinks-class a:visited{
text-decoration:none;
color:#666;
}

.adlinks-class a:active{
text-decoration:none;

For submenu also you need to add codes on template.css
I have post part of codes since you need to read about it yourself. This part only show you how to add dropdown menu in your top menu but not whole story!

/*-------------------------------------mainmenu---*/
.top_menu {
background:url(../images/menubg.gif) 0 0 repeat-x;
height:39px;
position:absolute;
width:100%;
margin:111px 0 0 0;
/*overflow:hidden*/
}
ul.menu-nav {
list-style:none;
padding-top:7px;
margin:0 !important;

list-style: none;
position: relative;
}

ul.menu-nav ul {
background: url(../images/ddmbg.gif) repeat-x left top #363636;
display: none;
left: 0;
list-style: none;
margin: 0;
position: absolute;
top: 100%;
width: auto;
}

ul.menu-nav ul ul,
ul.menu-nav ul ul ul {
left: 100%;
top: 0;
}

ul.menu-nav li {
margin-right:18px;
padding:4px 0 4px 18px;
background:url(../images/dotmenu.gif) repeat-y 0% 0%;

display: inline;
float: left;
position: relative;
}
ul.menu-nav li:first-of-type{
background: none;
}

ul.menu-nav ul li {
background: none;
padding: 0;
margin: 0;
display: block;
width: 100%;
}

Good luck
AL

well, in second part.... You need to assign and enable the module from backend (Admin control panel).
There are two other post here by dpacadmin and lucato that you can read and then find out how exactly these things work on joomla.

After messing around several hours trying to make top menu drop-down in rhuk_milkyway, i came up with this thread and finally works with HXD Moomenu extension. Thank you lucato for your solution, works great.

Also remeber that some tempaltes come with no css files for dropdown menus. so this is the case then you need to create the css for drop down menus for your template.

Check and make sure that drop down css exists before spending much time on activating the drop down menus.
