virtuemart and joomla 1.5rc

I'm wanting to configure joomla for virtuemart but when I go to install it it says it needs legacy mode. What sacrifices am I making by doing this and how difficult will it be to change things over to non legacy once vm is ready for joomla native? I hope i've explained myself well enough.
