Logged In but no users menus on the home page

I have a strange thing happening. On the home page I log (or try) to the site as a registered user. The page refreshes, but appears that I am not logged in. The admin 'Logged In Users' shows I am logged in however.

If I find a link that takes me to a content item which is for registered users, I can open it and then the menu items etc appear as they should, but navigate to the home page and the users menu items go from view.

What has changed?

Joomla 1.5.25 (yes I know it's old, but until recently it was not broken, so why try to fix it).

Any help greatly appreciated.
