SEO(SEF)-Category-Link in Section Blog causes 404 error

Problem Description:
Hi,
I have a problem with the section blog layout. The category titles under the article titles are linked to an 404 error-page.
When I switch SEO off the links are working fine.

Can someone please help me with this?

I have the same issue on Joomla 1.5.3.
I switched "Category Title Linkable" in Article Manager Parameter off for the time being, while the section names are linkable and correctly lead to the section pages.

Any hint please?

I am having the same issue with Joomla! 1.5.3, SEO option turned on and apache mod_rewrite enabled. Clicking on a linkable category title produces a 404 error.

If anyone has a workaround or fix, please post here!

I suppose you all have .htaccess enabled ?

It would be useful to post the failing url to see what they look like.

Here is some more information that may help debug this:

I have a section blog layout with the following URL:
http://www.100mindstreet.com/bookshelf

From there, I link to a category blog layout with the following URL:
http://www.100mindstreet.com/bookshelf- ... evelopment

The automatically generated link for the linkable category title which gives the 404 error is:
http://www.100mindstreet.com/bookshelf- ... evelopment

I checked, and my .htaccess file is present. I tried with the following line present and commented out, but it didn't seem to make a difference either way.
Options +FollowSymLinks

It may be useful to note that the linkable section titles do work, as they generate the following url:
http://www.100mindstreet.com/bookshelf

With SEO enabled, the Category links in the Section Blog layout are actually bringing up articles with the same ID as the category... if there is no article with that ID, then it results in a 404 error.

Don't know what the fix is.

is the var $live_site setting completed in your configuration.php file?

Also perhaps if you completed the Post Assistant so we might identify any commonality in your server scenarios.

Problem Description:
I did not have the $live_site configured in configuration.php -- I\'ve added that, but still have the problem.

A section blog page like this:
http://wisdomtherapy.com/services - click a Category link for a displayed article, and you get something like
http://wisdomtherapy.com/services/suppo ... roups.html
when it should really be this:
http://wisdomtherapy.com/services/support-groups.html

The Category \"Support Groups\" does have ID 43, but when that extra bit of url \"43-support-groups.html\" gets added, I end up with a 404 error. In cases where the Category ID is matched by an article ID, I end up with the article.

I have $live_site set and 404 is displayed when clicking the section name when SEO is on.

I'm going to make a few assumptions here:

That I understand the problem posted correctly
That you - like I had this problem on the Frontage;
That you are running J 1.5.3 STBL
That you want a solution.


Line #74 of file:
components\com_content\views\frontpage\tmpl\default_item.php
Should read:

Changing catslug to catid will resolve the issue of Show Cat Names, Make Cat Links loading a 404 when the Cat name is clicked.

This fix works regardless of what SEF options you choose in the global Configuration. Can't say what issues may arise with futre updates and never edit core stuff without backups -- blah, blah.

hi, i also have this problem. i have a clean install of Joomla 1.5.3 and my category links do not work. i have also tried extended menu-- no luck. they dont work on breadcrumbs or on submenus. i get the 404 error as well. i tried the catslug replace on all my com_content files with the override set. it worked for the breadcrumbs but not the side menu. does anyone know what file needs to be changed for that to work?

I gave the patch a try but it didn't work. It simply transforms a category link

from this:
/section_title/12-category_title/34-article_title.html

to that:
/section_title/category_title/34-article_title.html

But the link still results in a 404 error page with the message "404 - article #0 not found!".

ok - i'm putting this here because i think it may be in the same line of issues - i'm a real novice and was really surprised to see how easy simple site build was with joomla - had more or less finished - was advised to turn on "mod_rewrite" to solve an issue - realised that i was getting out of my depth and turned it off again - and immediately got "404 site not found" both for my site and for Joomla admin - I touched nothing!

any ideas??

Hi! I'm having the same issue with Joomla 1.5.20. My site uses Joomfish to support 2 languages. Strangely, one of the languages (not the default one) works when category/section is published with sef, while the other one crashes on the same category with the 404 #x Article is not found message. Furthermore one of the contacts appears wrong.
With sef off, everything works fine

Any progress/patch/solution in this matter would be appreciated...

wow i cant believe how many of us are having this issue
i too am using the CORE SEF of Joomla
i tried using the sh404sef component but it wasnt working out the way i needed on this server

So i removed it some time ago

today however i did add a few articles to the site
and i decided to just check out the linkable CATEGORY deal
when i click on the category, i also get the 404 page

yeah...

I "solved" my problem changing my module code and making this link to "index.php?..." without the SEF urls. This is bad because this way I "show" to the world (specially google) non-friendly urls.

You can se this at www.reivax.com, on "news", "cases", and "events" title and pictures the link refers to index.php. All other links refers to friendly urls.

What a shame joomla has this problem since 1.5.3!
All joomla 1.5 sites have this problem, and it`s a core bug.

Is there any fix or patch, whatsoever for this??

instead of using this feature i am simply using another component to use for articles and blogging.

made by Yootheme. Its a component they created called ZOO
which comes with "apps and modules" one of which is a CATEGORY module.
its working perfectly

What should I do now, I don't want to turn off SEO because I want neat urls

Nice to join this thread of people having exactly the same troubles I have...

I also found the patch proposal as listed above

It sounds perfect, because it describes precisely what happens: the category is added to the link path - but is not required, and such a path will never work
I carried out all the indicated code change steps to get rid of it - however, all the code changes simply do not show any effect, the cat. part is still concatinated...

It is obviously a severe Joomla bug - and nobody can solve it....?

Everytime I install something, change something, edit something -->boom a new error

Then I go to joombla forum--> boom 100 users with the same problem
