User Menu (1.5.16)

I am fairly new to Joomla and have a mental block regarding use of the user menu and front end access.

I have no problem with setting up 'front end user login' and 'change of profile' forms, but I need to present editors with a list of articles that they are permitted to edit. The articles may or may not all be from the same category or section but I would like them to be listed on their front end login form.

Is it possible to do this please?

If it is possible to do it, any guidance will be greatly appreciated. (I have just bought 2 books which are more confusing than helpful in this area). I am currently having to give editors back-end access which I am not really happy about.
