Article Layout Menu Item

I am trying to create an article layout menu item. Everything proceeds according to plan until I have to select an article. I click the select button and I am taken to a listing of the site's articles. I click on the article for which I want to create menu item and nothing happens. I am stuck on this article selection page.

Any help would be much appreciated

Selecting an article from that list is kind of quirky.

The item in the list highlights when you point at it, but only the text of the article title is clickable. So try clicking directly on the text of the article title.

If that doesn't work, I have no idea what could be wrong.

thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, clicking on the link itself is what I have done with no luck.

Hmm... something is fishy somewhere.

Are you using an old or uncommon web browser?

Okay so I was using Firefox 2.0.0.20. I downloaded FF 3 and tried again with no luck. I did notice this time, that when I click on the select article button once, I do not get a pop up or get sent to a new window. Rather, random parts of the left side of the disappear. See image.
article menu item error.jpg
Then if I click on the button a second time I get taken to the article selection page where I am once again stuck.

So there's that piece of the puzzle. Then your question made me give it a try in Internet Explorer 6. When I clicked on Article select this time I received an "error on page" message in the bottom left hand corner. These are the details of the error message:

Line: 1
Char: 1
Code: 0
URL: http://crossroadsct.org.previewdns.com/ ... e=mainmenu

Any thoughts with those two new pieces to the puzzle?

Javascript errors in your browser would explain why the page stopped working, but that just raises another question. Why is the javascript crashing? We know that the Joomla admin interface works in Firefox and IE, so something in your installation must have changed.

The admin interface must be using mootools to pop the dialog up on the admin interface. Have you made any attempts to alter the mootools file in your installation?

I would make sure the mootools file and the admin site templates are the same ones that came with your distribution of Joomla.

If I was you, I would install Firebug on that fresh copy of Firefox and try to track down the javascript error.

I'm running into the same problem.

I seem to have the same problem, so I'd say it's an epidemic...

When I add a menu item with "Article Layout" type, I can kinda select the article. The pop-up appears, listing all the articles. I can click on one of the articles and the name of the article subsequently appears as normal in the select article parameter. However, even after I've filled in all the other relevant details, I can neither apply nor save the menu item. My only option is to "close" it (i.e. discard the menu item).

Ours is a very infrequently updated website. I have got existing older menu items from 12 months ago which do point to Article Layout pages, so I know it's a relatively recent problem. I can't make changes to those menu items now, as they exhibit the same symptoms.

This error appears in one of my Firefox logs which may (or may not) be of relevance:

Code: Select all

"document.getElementByID("id_id") is null"
Error: document.getElementById("id_id") is null
Source File: http://ourdomain.foo/administrator/index.php?option=com_menus&task=edit&type=component&url[option]=com_content&url[view]=article&menutype=footer_menu

PHP Version: 5.2.3
Web Server: Apache/2.0.52

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008070208 Firefox/3.0.1

Oh, and I'm not on Godaddy (as another post raised a related Godaddy issue).

Edit: Having read my own post, I realised I was using an older version of Firefox. I've updated to 3.0.8 (the latest at the time of writing). The problem remains. However, I'm now seeing a different error message:

Code: Select all

Error: [Exception... "Component is not available"  nsresult: "0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE)"  location: "JS frame :: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/[my username]/Application%20Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/default.w8p/extensions/%7Be0204bd5-9d31-402b-a99d-a6aa8ffebdca%7D/components/nsSessionStore3.js :: sss_saveState :: line 1923"  data: no]

Line: 1923
I have tried using the Firefox browser in 'safe mode', however this does not help, so I can exclude any browser add-ons.

I am having exactly the same problem in Firefox, IE and Safari. The details are:

1. Only affects main menu not any others
2. Can create a new alias with no problems
3. Save/apply buttons do not work when trying to create an article layout in my main menu only.

Very strange. Am pulling hair out. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

It seems that this is a common problem when using the Godaddy previewDNS service.

Otherwise the joomla installation is missing some files.

@CardNation: Thanks for the quick reply. We're not using Go Daddy or on a preview DNS url for the site that has this problem. Do you know which folders/files in Joomla are the ones that control these buttons for the main menu? If so, please can you let me know and I'll try overwrite them on the server in case some of them are missing or corrupted.

I can't recall off hand, but given that some files could be incomplete, I would recommend a fresh install if possible. Just to eliminate any future problems.

Has anyone switched out of Godaddy's preview DNS and had this problem go away?

Once you switch to your domain name, everything works as it should.

For anyone who had the same problem as me, I managed to fix it using the sledgehammer technique...

I basically overwrote everything in the administrator folder except for the components folder - for the love of god don't overwrite this or bad things happen and uploaded that to the server.

This saved me having to do a completely fresh install as suggested (Thanks anyway CardNation I do appreciate your help!)

tkay3,

I posted to a thread related to the previewdns/menu items. Once they made their site live it cleared things up. You can see more here: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=431&t=395920

If you have M17n extension installed this might be the problem:

In the beginning of the file /administrator/components/com_menus/views/item/tmpl/form.php
is this code:

Code: Select all

<?php if( $this->name == "Article Layout" ){ ?>
	else if( document.getElementById('id_id').value == 0 ){
		alert( "<?php echo JText::_('Please select an Article', true ); ?>" );
	} <?php } ?> else {
But the Element with id ('id_id') is not present in the page so javascript blocked and the save and apply button does not work.
