An Error has occurred! Unable to open configuration.php file

Post by Quirrel » Wed Jul 22, 2009 7:04 am

I've had my host upgrade me to php5.

After several hours of messing about and waiting for DNS to propogate, and then waiting again for DNS to propogate I managed to get Joomla reinstalled.

However. Now I cannot edit any of the main administation stuff because of the error above

An Error has occurred! Unable to open configuration.php file to write!

Any ideas as to why this would be happening?

Current permissions are 644. Tried changing to 666 and it allows me to change it.

Not ideal having to go in and change a files permissions every time.

I did install from Fantastico. Could this be a problem and would it be better to install it manually?

So far I've tried.

Editing config file to add in FTP permissions manually - didn't work.

making a copy of config file and renaming to config.php - didn't work

Any other ideas?

This has just got stranger.

After changing it back to 644. I tried to then edit something else. I remember to change it to 664, this time it won't write.

Now it will only write if it's in 666.

Having read the installation section, I came across this.
experienced by many Linux/Unix host Users in the past where there are file write permission issues with the
Users Host Provider particularly on Shared Hosting servers. This can significantly affect the installation of
new Extensions or writing to the configuration.php file.
Using the FTP layer eliminates the need to make directories and files writable and thus improves overall
security of the installation and server. It also makes the site administrators job a lot easier!
just now everything is set to local host. which seems a bit odd. I've tried changing it to my ftp details manually in configuration.php file but it's not worked.

Do you think I'm on the right track?

I'm having this issue now. Just moved to a new host - Cartika. Keep the config file at 644, unless I need to change something. Wish I knew what was going on.

Cartika, have you seen this before?
