Hi,

I'm after a bit of advice.

I've been doing some digging around and I have come to the conclusions that the recommended permissions are 755 for directories and 644 for files.

I would like to know if 775 for directories and 664 for files is safe to use...

... as on one host where I tried this out the directories and files were set to 755 and 644 respectively and the site would not work:
Could not write to Config file, could not install componenets and all directories undder Help>System Information > Directory Permissions was unwritable.

I looked on a friends hosted joomla site and when it was installed the directories were set to 775 and 664 - which was done automatically so his host must have those permission set...

Therefore, if I change mine to 775 and 664 it must be safe? Mustn't it?

Many thanks in advance for you advice.

NB: When playing around just to try it out - when I change directories to 775 they show as writable and when I changed configuration.php to 664 it also allowed me to save changes via global configuration. So just wanted to know if okay to keep that way.
Thanks.

Thank you. Found quite a few articles on the subject but that first one at least explains wy I had to set them to 775.

What is strange is that my friends host automatically has directories as 775, so I assume this is secure enough as it was only discovered due to my problems.

So the main questions is - while the advice is to change to 755 - is it safe enough to leave at 775?

Thanks.

Thank you for the link. Had seen that too and it's also very non-commital in that it suggest that the permission be reset to more secure ones like 755 and 644.

I.e. all sites say have 755 and 644.

BUT a certain host - i think it is 123reg - of my friends joomla instal automatically had 775 and 664.

so if a host has them than surely i can leave mine like that?

I don't think there's going to be an answer other than "we suggest you change to 755 and 644 so I'm giving up.

But thanks all for your help.
