Help with adding a sub-menu

I added a sub-menu item to one of the side menus on my site. I linked the item to an article. Now the sub-menu item shows up only on the page with that article, but when I go to other pages that include that same side menu, the sub-menu item doesn't appear.

There is an option in the menu module "Always Show Sub-menu Items". That will show the items even if they are not in the active branch.
