How do I change a joomla site from .net to .com

Post by Tonja8 » Fri May 28, 2010 10:31 pm

Hello! I'm wondering if anyone can direct me to some good info on how to change the url on a complete joomla installation on godaddy hosting from mysite.net to mysite.com.

I know what to do from the godaddy side, but I need to know what to do from the joomla admin side.

Thank you so much for your time!

If GoDaddy changes your web site from .net to .com and your code is moved automatically, you should be good. You will want to verify that your "account" name has not changed as it is typically part of the $log_path and $tmp_path variables located in Joomla's configuration.php file.

Thank you for answering! Godaddy told me that I'll need to go in and change some things in configuration.php and I'm not sure how complicated that is going to be. I'm looking at that file right now and it looks pretty straightforward...I just replace any instance of ".net" with ".com", and I do the same with email, links, and content throughout the site...right?

It varies from site to site, however the $log_path and $tmp_path variables will need to be changed assuming your account/path changed. Give it a shot. If something you changed does not work, change it back. :)

If you run into any specific questions, please let us know.
