How to style a menu?

Hi,

Basically I am trying to tackle two issues and could use any help out there!

1) I am trying to create a menu that is built from images.
(currently using the Menu Item > Parameters (System) >Menu Image )
My issue is how do I create a "Hover" state for that image, and a "Selected State" ?
Perhaps I am not using this menu function properly?

2) My second issue is that this menu contains one sub-menu.
How do I style the sub-menu ?

I have attached a photo of my screen, that might help clarify anything.
