Log path and tmp path in configuration file

Hi, would someone be able to explain this to me please..

I am modifying a copy of our original configuration.php file and the log file and the tmp file show as follows:

var $log_path = '/customers/mysite.co.uk/mysite.co.uk/httpd.www/NewSite/Joomla_1.5.17/logs';
'/customers/mysite.co.uk/mysite.co.uk/httpd.www/NewSite/Joomla_1.5.17/logs';

var $tmp_path = '/customers/mysite.co.uk/mysite.co.uk/httpd.www/NewSite/Joomla_1.5.17/logs';
'/customers/mysite.co.uk/mysite.co.uk/httpd.www/NewSite/Joomla_1.5.17/tmp';

Only thing is - the Joomla_1.5.17 folder is completely empty. How can the original site function with these 2 seemingly incorrect entries?
