Site migration 404 An error has occurred - administrator

We have inherited a Joomla website developed by someone else, which I have just moved to our server.

The front of the site is working correctly, however I can not access the administration area - i see an error:

404 - An error has occurred.

Component Not Found

This is my first experience with using Joomla, so I'm not sure how to fix this issue. I have read a number of posts on various forums, but I'm still not clear what is the likely cause.

Is it likely that there is something missing/corrupt in the Joomla files themselves or is it more like a configuration setting?

I'd love some assistance please.

Your administrator folder must exist because a Joomla site cannot work without an administrator folder (a lot of files are requested from the administrator folder to generate any Joomla page).

In any case, to access the backend of a Joomla website, you will need to go to:

http://domainname.com/administrator

If that doesn't work, the it might be that they have changed the backend URL through a 3rd party extension such as AdminTools or RS Firewall. You will need either to get the backend URL from them or disable all the plugins related to AdminTools/RS Firewall from the database.

If all else fails, then check if there is something wrong in your .htaccess file.

Thanks itoctopus, when I visit the administrator url I get the 404 message. I can see in the file manager that the folder exists. The previous developer of this site used this URL to login: www.domainname/administrator/?EXarcl and it was working on the site before it was migrated to our server. This URL produces 404 error for me.
I checked the .htaccess file and as far as I can tell, there's nothing that is clearly obvious that would cause the issue, it is just the default htaccess text that comes with Joomla.
Is there anything in particular I should be looking at?

Try running the Forum Post Assistant on your local site, the extended results show the components and plugins installed on your site. You can check that list(or post it) for any security extensions that may be changing your admin login.

I see a security plugin installed, sometimes they create a new admin login url and the original one no longer works. Do you have a non-standard login url you are suppose to use for logging into your site?

But this is not working either. Would it make sense to try to back up the database and files, and try a new install of maybe a newer version of Joomla?

You could check the key for the admin login in the database using phpMyAdmin;

You could disable the jSecure plugin in the database by setting "published" to 0(zero) for that plugin in the _plugins table. Also look for it in the _components table and set "enabled" to 0(zero).

If that doesn't disable it try renaming the jsecure plugin's folder in the plugin directory of your install,
