publish dates not retained

I have a client who won't leave 1.5.25 (an argument for another time)
in the back end dates are not retained with article creation. No dates in the Article Manager date column. When creating a new article "Created Date" "Start Publishing" date are not retained after save.

any help would be great.

Did it work before?
Was the PHP version on the server recently updated?

btw: 1.5.25 is unsafe. You should at least update to 1.5.26 + install the security patch (an advice for another time ;) )

I have tried downgrading the php with no luck. I should add that I have an almost identical site on the same server with no date problems.
