I read the Joomla docs about what code(s) to put into the .htaccess file, but I wonder if it's still current?
I'm really afraid of messing anything up in there, currently it's untouched.
What exactly should I be putting in that file?

how about starting with the standard joomla .htaccess.

Joomla 1.5.15, which just came out, includes an updated htaccess file.

Please note upgrading will not automatically replace or otherwise touch the existing .htaccess file or create one if present; you have to review the text file and either rename it to .htaccess or pull out stuff manually to merge.
