Can I ask
Is there anything IrfanView offered that Photoshop does not

Yes Photoshop is a commercial product but I know Photoshop and love it dearly.
I can optimise images in Photoshop as well as anything else.

Hi...

Adobe Photoshop and IrfanView is have same function, for editing and optimize image, but Photoshop have more feature and tool.

Photoshop is commercial tool and IrfanView is Freeware tool. Both tool is good for optimizing image for web.

;) ;)

the hosting of your site is also very important. if the server has 600 other sites, even the optimization is superb, this wont help you!

find a good host before you make large joomla sites !

Yes, I'm agree with that.
And for perfectly, use GIF, JPG/JPEG and PNG format ONLY because that format is good and have small size for web, so our web have more speed load.

;D

This is a good point. I use a hosting site godaddy and they refuse to tell me how much memory my hosting has. I installed jomsocial and azrul recommends 64 mb of memory for top efficiency. When I called my hosting service to ask them about my memory after I noticed extreme slow down recently, godaddy refused to disclose this information. The will not commit to how much memory is allocated to my joomla website since it is shared services.

I am going to try optimizing the database to see if that helps. I removed a lot of flash widgets and banners from my site and already noticed a difference in performance.

Question: many of my pictures on my site come from affiliate advertising banners html and not pictures on my hosting. Do these html banners slow down my joomla?

A good tool to use: http://www.joomlaperformance.com use the performance grader.

For an example of how fast Joomla (or other scripts) can run with the right hosting setup, see: www.joomla.org and http://extensions.joomla.org

SallyR,

Sorry you're having trouble. Are things looking better after you optimized the database? Along with server resources, your site's performance is also influenced by third-party plugins, banners, multimedia, etc. If it's still slow, we're happy to take a look if you can reply or PM me your domain name.

Hi, we have been having some performance issues too, I would love it if you guys at GD could look into http://www.travel2help.org - it's on shared Linux hosting with you.

I sent PM after optimize and still having major performance slow down. I upgraded to deluxe hosting but think that I need more memory as suggested by Jomsocial. I have dozens of users registering with my community daily and need to get this resolved. Please PM me back and I will call godaddy suppport.

The 64MB they are recommending isn't memory for your site, it's the php memory_limit. If the page loads at all it means that's not the problem (but I think JomSocial actually sets the limit in the script overriding the server setting, unless I'm confusing it with a different component).

The server is probably the biggest factor in a speedy Joomla site (or any site for that matter) as you can optimize all you want, but on an overloaded server it will still be slow. There are many hosts who don't overload servers, and Joomla can certainly run extremely quickly, as evidenced by the official sites Brad linked to earlier.

I did a few things to ramp up the horsepower and so far so good. There is no silver bullet but a multi-pronged approach. At this point I am going to stick to my shared hosting if all remains stable (thanks godaddy!). Remediation steps:

[*] Did back ups prior to any of these steps.
[*] Optimized mysql database.
[*] Upgrade my shared hosting to a dedicated IP and increased band width.
[*] Deleted some obsolete folders and files from my server (some of these had images - not sure if it caused slow down but good time to do housekeeping.
[*] Ran the web optimization diagnostics recommend in this thread (thanks Brad!). Images were a big offender.
[*]Removed real time traffic statistics code from my html template and turned off real time.
[*]Removed Fireboard forum from my 1.5.x Joomla. In order to run Fireboard I had to enable legacy mode and I think that slowed me down a touch according to documentation I read. My forum was brand new and not much content yet so it was an easy adjustment. I will look for a forum that works with jomsocial and 1.5.x
[*]Archved 50% of my articles. And reduced my front page articles down another 50%. Many of articles contained banner images that were identified in diagnostics as slowing down my site.
[*] Reviewed all external links on my front page and looked for slow loading website links. I found one that was a real snail and removed it.
[*] Removed an oversized banner image from my header that displayed on all web pages of my site. Replaced on front page with a smaller banner.
[*] Removed flash banner from my front page.
[*] Began applying upgrade patches through my hosting service. Was at 1.5.7 and applied upgrade patches offered on the site that went through 1.5.10. Had some major issues and had to roll back to 1.5.8. My hosting service was very helpful in getting my website back in working condition (turnaround about 1 hour!). Not sure if applying patch to 1.5.8 helped performance but the nasty security issue manifested (I think fixed in 1.5.11). I may need to uninstall some other components and they apply patches again manually. I am determined to stay current with joomla and get those security fixes in.

One more thing that really tuned up my website's performance:
as I noted above, I uninstalled the Fireboard component that was not compatible with my joomla 1.5.x (I had to enable legacy mode to make it work when it was installed). I disabled the legacy mode to get it back to 1.5.x. And I did one more tweak that really made it speedy after I uninstalled the Fireboard, I deleted the cache files for Fireboard in the joomla back end administrator cache manager. Now it's running like a fresh newly installed joomla site! :)

Select Tools --> Clean Cache from the drop-down menu on the Back-end of your Joomla! installation.

DescriptionThe Cache Manager allows you to delete the Cache files from your web server. Cache files are temporary files that are created to improve the performance of your site. If you have made significant changes to your web site, such as changing your Template or Language, your cache files may be out of date. To avoid any problems caused by out of date cache files, you can delete all of the cache files. This will cause Joomla! to create new copies of these files that will be current with your web site.

Very thorough work. Some won't have done anything for speed, but aren't necessarily bad to do occasionally anyway.

[*] Upgrade my shared hosting to a dedicated IP and increased band width.
[*] Deleted some obsolete folders and files from my server (some of these had images - not sure if it caused slow down but good time to do housekeeping.

For the external links, was it just links to other sites, or were you loading content from other sites? If it's just links it won't affect your site no matter how slow they are. If you are loading content then you definitely want to keep on top of those.

What problems did you have when upgrading? There are several security issues with the version you're running.

I'm also interested in what the effect is from this. Does it compress the database, or remove old data?
