I had CB installed on my site, along with FireBoard, a shoutbox chat system and UddelIM, and really thought it improved the site. After a while I couldn't pay attention to the site, and usage dropped off. Recently I had the time and inclination, upgraded the site to Joomla 1.5 and started upgrading everything else, making the decision to go only with Native components and modules. I installed the newest version of CB, and then looked for the rest. UddelIM is upgraded... but FireBoard is gone, as is the shoutbox system that worked, and I find that almost all the old CB mods and plugins are gone or replaced with commercial versions. I feel like I'm being nickeled and dimed to death. I've made the decision to uninstall CB and see what else develops in its place. It just doesn't add to the functionality of the site like before. The BB I chose -ccBoard only integrates to the degree that it uses CB avatars. UddelIM still integrates, but pretty much, that's all I can find.
Honestly, this isn't just a problem with CB, but with Joomla in general. I'm finding many of the modules and components I was using before are either not upgraded to 1.5 native, or are gone altogether, and many of the replacements and new interesting ones are commercial. I chose Joomla over other CMS systems because of the large and robust Open Source development community. I'm investigating switching now to another system, or independent forum, chat, and blogging systems.
I understand people wanting to be paid for their work, but this is an Open Source project, and feel it would benefit everyone better if there were a sliding scale, free to free sites, a small fee for subscription sites, and higher fees for corporate users.
