Im not sure If your good at html I think you should be able to open the spalsh page under xampp, and rewrite the link from joomla to look into your jump drive instead of c:\ same for admin link
Like I said earlier Im not a programmer, hope this helps
best wishes
aj

Unfortunately there are no paths that point to C: in the splash page.....  There are a couple that point to localhost, however I do not think that has anything to do with my problem..

Cheers

Hi Russell,

It’s the time that’s hard not the code /html/PHP/. I have to finish updating the new sites. It’s on the cue for updating the interfaces of both kits.

As for the drive it has to c:\ as per the instructions.

So yes it’s not going to work correctly if it’s the {g:\} directory.

All the config files are set to an path if change the path yes it not going to work.

I’m looking into a few servers distros in the next weeks to come but there are a lot of factors to this.

For more information on the system go to http://www.howtomambo.com

Look for the Mambo Starter kit videos most the instructions work the same way.

Cheers got to go.

Brian

Hello,

What are the proper steps to change the passwords?  I made some changes via the XAMPP page under security, but then wasn't able to log back in.  I uninstalled a re-istalled, but don't want to make the same mistake.

Thanks

To copy the site to a live server, you should only have to change the configuration.php files to point to the new directory and insert the sql file. (in phpMyAdmin, you'd export the Starterkit Joomla tables, then on the live server, import the sql).

@ed, you might not want to use starterkit on your live site, unless you have lots of changes/hacks to make. But you'd download your files to a "joomla2" or joomla_working" directory, create a new table through phpMyAdmin, and import the live site's database into the starterkit database.

@AlvinC, Have you updated the database?

Can you explain in more details, cos I do not know how to update the database...

What I have done so far is, download my root into the starterkit, and name it "mysite"
I have tried to understand the phpmyadmin, but did not.
I do not understand what you mean when you mentioned that I have to insert the sql file (can u explain it to me).

I have spent one month by myself to understand all this after I get to know Joomla, but I think I can't understand it by myself. It is impossible for newbie to learn all about the PhpMyAdmin....and all those other things?
If it possible, then can someone point me a direction so that I may go and study that page or website (that deal only with Joomla)...
I wish to understand how to use Joomla to the full.

According to ChunkTrukk in the quote on top, you suggested that I should not use the starterkit on the live site, may I know what should I use if I wish to edit my site on my decktop and then later upload/ftp it for Joomla?

This is my first time using Joomla and php, and I am completely new to all this... Thank You in advance for all the help!

Oops no i haven't will do , also what i have described above would this be enough as far as doing updates to my site and or development work to upload later ? did i follow the correct procedure ?

What i want in a nutshell is full Joomla running on my memory stick to take to work and back home with me for designs and developments prior to uploading to main site and i cant to get a clear description of this

Alvin,

A few months back, I read about someone creating a LiveCD (bootable mambo/joomla). I am pretty sure it was on the forums.mamboserver.com. But you can put this on your memory stick and boot from it.

This is how I use StarterKit: I create a new j! install and name it "new_client_local". Once I have all of the major changes (and hopefully minor) complete, I zip my my "new_client_local", ftp that zipfile to the server, and unzip it through the file manager.

I then change configuration.php to match my live settings.
If I'm using phpshop, I change it's config file to match the live settings.

For MySQL database:
Turn on Xampp
Goto: http://localhost
- For me, I click english
- Click on phpMyAdmin (under Tools)
Click on the database joomla is on (again, I usally name it "new_client_local")
Hit Export
- Select All
- Save as File
- Under Data: Complete inserts
- Add DROP TABLE (I think you need this)
Then hit go

When you are inserting this into the Live site
You might need to set up a database and user through your CPanel (do a search on this)
Go to your phpMyAdmin
Click on the new database for joomla
Click SQL
Browse for file: point your browser to the sql file you created a second ago
Hit go

That should do it.

Sometimes I just do a new install on the server, reinstall all the components, and insert the sql file. Sometimes it seems this is quicker to me.

Chuck

Hello everyone cant answer all of your questions right now but I’ll do my best in a few days I have a wedding I have to go to this weekend.

Then I have take care of a few family matters.

A quick answer: local-devbox to live server-Production-Box  questions.

The template are easy just ftp then Production box’s joomla-install/templates folder.
The DB and config file take more work.

If windows to linux.
Linux to windows.
or even if windows to windows.

The path’s and password settings.
Not to mention content image paths if done with editor not {mos-image-bot}

I’ll go into it in the next few weeks.

I’m also making a new control panel for the starter Kit.

Ok have a good weekend all.

Cheers,

Brian

I was just wondering what the difference was between Joomla! Starter Kit (JSK) and Joomla! Stand Alone Server (JSAS)?

Hello all I'm back.

I will be putting out a new for control panel sometime next week.
This will be a Beta 1 version.

As for the last question about.
The Joomla Starter Kit (JSK) and Joomla! Stand Alone Server (JSAS)?.

Well I don't use the Joomla! Stand Alone Server (JSAS) so I could not tell you I guess you can try them both out and get back us to all.
I'm sure it has its advantages and disadvantages like all systems do.

Ours is just easy and it works without installing any promgrams or drive letters or windows registry keys.
Plus in the next month or better said 1/2/2006. We will be adding a lot more of features to the plantform.

Cheers happy holidays to all!

Why not making the video files available in one single zip file or zip per video? I personally dont like having to wait to load and then look
after in the cache folder so I can save them for future reference. I'm willing to grade them nonetheless, as I'm sure all the folks are.  ???

One more, how do I get your startkit, do I have to register?  :o

JSK is 72 MB.... I mean it's huge for my USB2 STICK

Uniform server 8 MB and work like a charm on my USB 2 STICK

I'd tried it on usb 1.1 first and pages were loading slow

I'd swiched to USB2 and pages load very fast

I do  not want to put down SK but if you want to have JOOMLA! ON STICK
IMHO uniform server is the best bet..

Hello everyone,

Alright ok see that are a lot request for a smaller download.

Personally I like Xampp over UNIFORM SERVER but I can see that yes it’s a large download for most connections I’m very lucky with a 7MB download speed but I know this is not the case for most people still. “optonline.net its fast”

I have been working on a control panel with some success and it’s ready for beta release.

But at this time it’s made for Xampp I guess I could work it to UNIFORM server version.

I don’t what to turn this into a nightmare build.
Or this camp v.s. this camp B.S.

Both systems have their value and not one of them is perfect because there is no such a thing.

UNIFORM SERVER: Has a very small foot print and works on a
USB drive because it uses a w: drive this could be done for Xampp / JSK as well.

But when one starts to develop with UNIFORM SERVER you start to see that it’s file size has to grow just add Pear and AODBC and other library’s like decoders “Zen, Ion cube ”and you will see the file size grow. Now add a few CMS app’s and it will start grow and grow.

If you’re going to use UNIFORM SERVER as a mobile web server to take to a client site
It’s great if you don’t own a notebook.

Xampp is large only because it has a lot extra’s like an FTP server, mail server and
a ton of libraries  it could be said that Xampp has more then you need. But it’s like an old saying. “Better to have a gun not need it then to need a gun and not have one.”

It more of a pain to have to hunt down library files for windows then having compile them.

So download now or later but you will download that’s for sure.

But Joomla it works on both systems. You’re free to make your choice “they say it’s a free country ;).”

Moving on>>

I have received a ton of email about registering to download add-ons and the server.
So this is what I’m going to do.
I have registered with sourceforge.net / sf.net a new project for a server. Were I will post the server and add-ons.

So you don’t have to register to download.

This new project will not only be a server for Joomla but for other CMS’s and web app’s
it will be a platform. First a {local/production} web development then in time it could turn into a {stage/intranet} web server. I can’t see such a system on the live internet there are too many variables in security and configuration for this to happen.

But for your local office intranet it works great.

I will hand out the new site name and url’s in a few days.
Most likely be live on 1/6/2006.

As for the person requested for zip download of all the movies. I run a web site not a download service. If I take he time make them then you should take the time watch them.
It’s not like I’m killing you with POP Ad’s or something.

But I again I do understand the file sizes on the videos are sizeable. I just finished working on a “FLV” Flash Video format and it works like a dream on size and speed
30 MB was like 3MB yes I know still large file but its progress P.S that’s with audio.
So if you have a slow broadband connection like 384k it’s not that bad.

As for the local to live server CMS transfer that’s a long How To.
I’d like to finish the first build of the new server.

Also it’s not a 123 job if you have content that you added images to with a web editor
Not with {mosimage} tag you will run into issues if you used the absolute path like

http://localhost/mambo/images/stories/s ... otgirl.jpg

Instead of the relative path ./images/stories/springbreak/hotgirl.jpg

If you used the {mosimage} there are no issues.

Also the version in some cases the web version and local versions are not the same.
So the scenarios have to put into place. Let say the database collation is not the same
One Swiss and other something else.

I could on and on .To start this is like to starting a support Nightmare with no pay.
I will do what I can but anyone feel free to help people each local to live will be different.

I have to go I’ll post again when I have more to offer.

Cheers and happy holidays,

Hello all I’m not in the best of health do to my nephews giving me a cold and half.
So the release will be delayed a few days or so it may take a little longer do to a back log of work.

As some of you know I have decided to closed the HowToMambo.com site plus the
Joomlalabs.com site and just make one site. This site will hold GPL works for both the
Joomla and Mambo plus the Server kit’s and a lot more in time.

This will take some time do. Content transfers and I have redo a lot of the movies anyway.

All the commercial software and training will be done of the Media 65 site http://www.m65.net.

I have most of the site finished but I have I few last minute changes I like to make first.

This will have the server kit and all the content under one roof with good flow.

I will give out the web site in as soon as I have the most of it parts in place. I just don’t want there to be many security holes. People love to hack in the black hat way.

Thanks for your support and I’ll see you soon.

You’re welcome Chuck.

Cheers Brian.

News update on Mambo and Joomla projects for HowToMambo.com & Jooomlalabs.com

We are moving these projects to you new site 123Webkit.com.
Now this site is on its alpha version and is still development.

We will post all the older videos and content from both HowToMambo.com and Joomlalabs.com but it will be updating and adding to those videos as time goes on.
We will also be switching to Flash Video format.

As for the Mambo Starter Kit and Joomla Starter Kit Servers these will be renamed “123 Web kit” and made into one server system.

Plus we will be adding more Web Based Apps to the server via download and update systems.

Hi can could be that there like single quote or double quote issue in the Php code.

? Try a fresh copy of joomla 1.0.7 or 1.0.6 version I'm running them both and I'm not having that issue on a test box.

What this looks like from your error is that your missing the version.php file.
Plus your not running the joomla starter kit I can tell from the path on your install.

Good luck.

Brian

Thats correct, I'm not running the starter kit, was trying to use my orginal install of xampp.  I do have a version.php  I just installed this on a live site with the same results so something else may be happening.

Hi hmm I could be a setting in your php.ini file safe mode ?.

So installed a fresh copy into you xamp and still getting error?

check you configuration.php in your Joomla install.

See if the path is not right  {line 9} it such look like this $mos_config_absolute_path = 'c:/xamp/xampp/htdocs/forums'

Now I only know this because of your error but it could be a lot of other things.

Your Joomla install is in a folder called forums so your browser is pointing to http://www.localhost/forums/
then path above should work.

Sometimes some config's in windows need double slashes
$mos_config_absolute_path = 'c://xamp//xampp//htdocs//forums'

But it should not be the case for this if you installed with the wizard.

Got to go ---- good luck.

Cheers,
Brian

Bonjour,

I love Joomla's concept, and have recently downloaded Joomlastarterkit without a hitch.

Thank you for having this available for people who need that extra time to edit their site^_^.

But the thing is, after installing the software on my computer, and starting XAMMP control like the tutorial said, when I typed in (http://localhost/joomla/) all it says is that the site is OFFLINE, and I need to contact the administrator.

I just want to know what I did  wrong.

What I did was install the Joomla Update Folder in C; Drive (the only thing I left in there)..took out the zips. And then I stupidly cofigured the "firewall?" program that came up when I launched Apache and MySQL.

Do I have to "allow" outbound connections?

Because the default had only inbound, should I have clicked outbound?

I'm so very confused, and wondering why it says that my local site  is OFFLINE. What could be the possible failures?

Is it probable that it's my firewall that's blocking my Database? Or can a firewall do that?

And if it IS this reason, what are the configuration settings I should allow?

Thanks,

P.S. I love the concept^_^

If I only could get the dern thing UP!^_^

Icy,

I might be able to help on this. It is probably one or two things.

1. Have you deleted the "installation" folder.

2. There is a problem connecting to the database.
    a. Did you leave the database password blank? If you did, you can open "configuration.php" in notepad and delete the password from it.

Let me know if this solves your problem.

Chuck

Success!!^_^

Yes, while deleting the zips and rummaging through the folders, I had accidently deleted one of the folders inside the Joomlastarterkit folder....Everything is going great now^_^

Your reply hastened me to check if I deleted a folder...and I did!

After unzipping a new one, and comparing, I had realized that I deleted one ;) (I am such an idiot)

Thank you!

Now I can start on my site^_^
