I'll be releasing a modified version (pseudo fork) of OpenRealty to improve a few integration issues.

I'll keep you posted at http://www.jaredritchey.com

I think this rather belongs to the "Open Source Products for Joomla!" board.

Moving the thread now.  ;)

Brian I'll be joining your newsletter today, are you still updating it?

P.S. The OR fork is nearly done.  I'll have our version posted this week sometime.

Jared -

How is the OpenRealty project doing? And, are you also planning on migrating to the v 1.5 MVC?

Hope all is well!
Amy :)

Amy;
After the development the IDX solution and my Real Estate WordPress Plugin we decided NOT to port the OR Fork to Joomla.  Instead the Fork is really nothing more than my taking OpenRealty and cleaning up URL's, CSS support, removal of a great deal of hard coded layout elements and added proprietary features that we are giving away along with a small collection of rapid development solutions based on my Template Design Kit from two years ago.  I like OR but I don't have time to support it as a fork and now that we have a way to take Joomla 1.0.12 menus and put them in WordPress and OpenRealty there is no reason to do much else beyond sharing users.

What we are doing instead is building a (component, module, bot) specifically designed for Joomla 1.5 and its our full intention that the project will be 100% free.  Some modules like paypal purchase of listings for FSBO's and such will be commercial in order to finance the project and we will use tons of real loose language so the entire project can be applied to automotive, boating, antiques or any type of gallery related project.

OpenRealty for all sensible purposes is little more than a gallery script with some features geared towards Realtors.  The issue for me has been the same issue I've had since the very day I started supporting OpenRealty many many years ago and that is the massive DataBase bloat when using it with IDX and RETS clients.

I really wanted to go all out with a stand alone real estate listing script since I had nearly 50 commercial grade templates assembled awaiting the anticipated 2.4 release of OR but now we realize that I can do the same thing faster, cleaner, and more effective with WordPress and our plugin.  WordPress is 100 times easier to develop for and I'll be converting all my designs to WordPress shortly after I release the plugin.

I'd love to know when the potential release of Joomla 1.5 is scheduled.  I've been actively converting my inventory from the template house to 1.5 and I'm backed up beyond all possible belief with the conversions.

Any heads up that is reliable on release would be good.  I HAVE not been following the forums closely lately.

What a thoughtful response. Thanks!

I agree with this: "OpenRealty for all sensible purposes is little more than a gallery script with some features geared towards Realtors." having worked with the product - I think you are right. Certainly, generalizing the data model and simplifying it will make it useful for lots of other "group listing" uses.

I've worked a great deal with WP, too. It is increasingly popular - IMO people have greatly underestimated it and it is rising beyond expectations. I buzzed around on your site - will give it a bit deeper look to see what you are up to.

I like your ideas on v 1.5, too. Bear in mind, there is a debate on whether or not proprietary licenses will be allowed with J! v 1.5 extensions, so give thought to business models that allow you to GPL all of your code, just in case! I have no idea what will be decided, of course, but, the copyright holders of Joomla! v 1.5 could decide that encrypted and non-redistributable extensions will no longer be supported.

Regarding your question on dates, Wilco posted an update today on Beta 2 and it sounds like they anticipate two RCs at four to six weeks, each. So, it could be approximately (of course!) three to six months before go live. Things are stabilizing and getting much better but there is a great deal of work to complete. (Also, of course, Wilco rightfully ends with it will be done, when it's done.)

Thanks, again, for your response and for all you've done for the community in this area. I'll keep an eye on things!
Amy :)

Yes Amy, I figured I guess to some point that the end of this year or the beginning of next would be Joomla 1.5 Full Swing.

Amy, I fully agree with you on WordPress, I'm a disciple.  Of the many dozens of articles I've written on the subject regarding WordPress "Loop" the place I most frequently reference and or send people to usually shuts up the Na Sayers whom hmmm and haaaw about using WP.  Check it out I think you will find it as interesting as I do.  http://www.adobe.com/newsletters/edge/j ... /article6/

You mention the issue with proprietary licenses.  I must say I have mixed emotions on that one.  I don't program I PAY $$ to my programmers so I own outright the code we produce and Its my right to give away which I like to do.  So in that regard the idea about proprietary licenses is of little effect to me because I'll gladly keep my stuff open source.  HOWEVER, I think a decision like that will keep MANY of the commercial components that are real effective and professionally thought out from making contribution to Joomla thereby keeping 1.0.12 in the game for a very very long time.

I guess we will have to see on that decision from the Joomla Developers and powers to be.  I respect whatever decision they make so we now wait for the jury to deliberate.

Although an old post there is new developments in this project. The Open Realty fork is now being released and features native support for Joomla integration.

Lots of code and layout feature improvements have been made.

You can read about it in two places until they get their new fork site up and running.

Better and more friendly support, more open to suggestions, and features that Open Realty is sure to copy eventually.
