Joomla Component Documentation for 1.012

Hello, I know the direction is towards 1.5 but I need to develop an extension for 1.012 for the simple reason that it is not available in the extensions library (looked back and forth).  I have bought the book for 1.5 but am finding out that 1.5 is a totally different animal than 1.012 and requires different coding set. 

Anyway, can somebody point me to a document or book that will discuss how to develop components in v1.012.  I have searched and googled and all I can find are Templating tutorials and incomplete docs/links about 1.012
