Are there any bidirectional templates?

Post by circumpunct » Fri Aug 01, 2008 12:40 pm

Are there any bidirectional templates available, commercial or otherwise?

Almost all templates seem to be hard-coded LTR. The few exceptions seem to be hard-coded RTL, or only support 1.5 in compatability mode.

Of course the Joomla packaged template JA Purity is theoretically bidirectional, but even that doesn't work properly.

I'm coding a multi-language site (using Joomfish) and have at least one RTL language to support.

Is there anything out there? I mean how hard can it be? (....if($this->direction == 'rtl')..... <img src="/images/xx.gif" alt="xxx" style="Filter: FlipH"> )

I'm sure there must be many people in my position, but I can't find even any BAD bidirectional templates out there.

Since Joomla aspires to be multilingual, imho every template should be bidirectional. Many companies are selling into foreign markets where a RTL language is spoken, but only commercial CMSs seem to be meeting that demand.

Hoping somebody will come back with a link to a site full of good bidirectional 1.5 native templates - but i doubt it. Please prove me wrong :)

Well not exactly deluged with replies.

It seems amazing the Joomla team have put so much effort into making this a truly excellent international platform, but support from template writers is virtually zero.

The original Milkyway and Beez templates are fully bidirectional, but other template writers do not seem to have taken the hint. Are we still locked into the old latin-characters-only mind set that does not care about the many other languages in the world?

Looks like I'll have to write my own bidirectional template from scratch (which I really don't need right now).

It's particularly ironic that Joomla is an Arabic word!

Hi Circumpunct,
I am an Australian Working in Liechtenstein in Europe and everyone here wants bi-lingual websites.
I am currently working on one now and I am designing the template from scratch.
I will try and stay in touch and let you know what solution I come up with.
Right now I am just working on the English version and then on German.
Regards
Chris

Hi Chris.

You should be ok I think, as German is a Latin language. It's really with right-to-left scripts like Hebrew, Farsi, Arabic, Urdu, N'ko, Syriac, Thaana, Tifinar, Bakhtiari, Pashto, Punjabi, Qashqai, Sindhi, Takestani etc. etc. that there is a problem.

Have you tried JoomFish? Fantstic for mutilingual sites (and free!)

Hi Circumpunct,

I am running a Farsi site (020.ir) under beez template.
In your post I understood it seems ok for you.
I would like to know what I should do to use its rtl feature. I have tried many things but unsuccessful.

Many thanks in advance for your help,
Sharzeh

Just switch the site language to Farsi and it will work automatically. Of course you must have Farsi installed.
