Thanks for your help! Right, time to get cracking on the site again!! :)
Glad to get you on the right path.

Another suggestion: When creating your articles, do you just use a WYSIWYG editor, or do you also edit the html code directly? If you don't look at the code, try doing it, and see if there is some sort of weird stuff in those articles. It almost looks like you pasted from a Word document?

Good luck with it.

The articles were posted from an email.. I saw somewhere else on the forum that a change needed to be done on Joomla so i could do that and when i made that change and pasted it worked fine!

Thanks again for the help!

Hi Joomla! gang,

I recently upgraded my web browser to MS IE8. When I next looked at my Joomla website I had a real shock. It was all over the place, and my l/h menu bar had completely disappeared. I was beside myself, and assumed the worst. What had I done? Had I been hacked? I just didn't know!

I looked at my site in Fire Fox and Google Chrome and the site displayed just beatifully, so just what was going on? I emailed my hosting support people and began researching the Joomla forums. I quickly saw that there is an issue with IE 8 not rendering some Joomla sites correctly. I saw that there was a plug-in on the Joomla! extensions. I saw many excellent reviews:

http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... 23/details

I quickly installed this 'fix' on my site. (It took me a while to fathom that the download zip file actually contains two files - one for Joomla v1 and one for 1.5. With fingers crossed I looked again at my site - It was still all over the shop and, as far as I could tell, it looked exaclty the same, so I had to put my thinking cap on again.

This morning I twigged what had happened, and fixed the problem. What I had was a template issue. I use ja_purity set as my default template. What I was looking at in IE 8 was a completely different template - PDA (which i assume is designed to render the website to mobile devices).

How could it be that the PDA template (not the fefault) was taking precedence and overiding the default template? This I still do not understand.

I decided to delete the PDA template. This done I gain looked at the site in IE8, and, bingo!, the real default template was rendered and the site was displaying beautifully once again.

I conclude that I wasted a lot of time in believing that my display problem was a compatability issue with IE8, when in fact what I really had was a template conflict. I read somehwere a while ago that you should only have the template(s) that you actually use on your site - the fewer the better. I have to confess that as a Joomla! newbie I did trial a few templates, and probably several too many.

In conclusion, to those who suspect an IE 8 compatability issue, it might just be worth your while checking over your templates for a possible cause of your problem.

;)

Klementz wrote:If the site works in IE8 *after* you click the "compatibility mode" icon (it looks like a page ripped in half, and appears to the right of the address bar), then you can just force your template to automatically put IE8 into compatibility mode:

Put this line in the head section of the template's index.php file:

Code: Select all

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7"/>
More details here:

Can anyone point me to a post that explains why this issue even exists? What does IE8 have that Firefox, Chrome, etc. does not? Are they writing new "standards" in Redmond again?

I am working on a site that uses Rocket Theme's Afterburner template, and the template won't even load in Internet Explorer 8 without going into this so-called compatibility mode.
I have the same problem with this template and I get the left and right column to collapse when adding articles to a menu structure so there must be something wrong with this template divs or something else bcs it works with other templates.

You can check this here http://www.travelmate.com/travel-servic ... rica/egypt http://www.travelmate.com/tools-a-help/about-travelmate also effecting comps like blog comp Lyftien bloggie.

So any tips or solution for this appreciated? :'(

Hi,

I'm facing the incompatibility problem with IE8.

I tried to access my website using Opera instead. I got the same problem I faced with ie8 - the site's messed up !

Any suggestions how to fix?

We have the same problem, IE 8 shows the PDA template instead of the regular template. We don't want to delete the PDA template because we do have a lot of mobile users. So how do we force it to display the correct template with IE8? It displays fine on other browsers, and we let people know that it works better with Firefox, but still have the majority using IE. We also want it to display properly for people who are new, or who just happen upon our site and are using IE8.

I also want to note that even in compatibility mode, it displays the PDA template, not the correct, default, template.

You have to use ReReplacer a Joomla addon and replace the dom.

That solve my problem with Afterburner. But this template have a lot of error for missing and problems with divs everywhere so do use it.

Hello,
The table in a category page is messed up in IE8 ( article title, author, hits). compatible mode works fine. the width property is 100%, works great in all browsers. however, i doesn't look to be 100% with IE8 ( 40 or 50).
any clue?
thank you

But no help.

Left and right navigation panel are not visible in IE8.

I also changed

Hello,

I have a weird problem when testing my site in Internet Explorer 8, whatever article I set as my front page, that page will not display properly.

When the same article is published elsewhere on the site it works fine, and nothing else seems to be affected.

I installed the IE8 compatibility v1.1 plugin mentioned above and this hasn't made any noticible difference.

Any ideas?

I have used the above "fixes" and they aren't working.
Here is what my code looks like. Can someone offer any assistance? I had the same issue with IE7, was able to get that to work and now am back to square one with IE8 HELP!!!

<head>
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />
<jdoc:include type="head" />
<link rel="stylesheet" href="<?php echo $this->baseurl; ?>/templates/system/css/system.css" type="text/css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" href="<?php echo $this->baseurl; ?>/templates/system/css/general.css" type="text/css" />

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="<?php echo $templateUrl; ?>/css/template.css" />
<!--[if IE 6]><link rel="stylesheet" href="<?php echo $templateUrl; ?>/css/template.ie6.css" type="text/css" media="screen" /><![endif]-->
<!--[if IE 7]><link rel="stylesheet" href="<?php echo $templateUrl; ?>/css/template.ie7.css" type="text/css" media="screen" /><![endif]-->
<script type="text/javascript" src="<?php echo $templateUrl; ?>/script.js"></script>

So, I found a fix to my problem...listed above

The right column was not showing in IE8, it appears to be because some of our content was being pasted in from MS Word and not notepad.

Make sure when you add content to your articles, that you strip all formatting out of the text by pasting from MS Word into MS Notepad and then paste in to Joomla Articles.

Hope this helps.

I have searched JA_Purity and have not found the "gte" code about which you are speaking. My page stops loading after the second article on the mainpage: http://linux.myspiritualadvisor.com Please help, I have to switch this BETA version over to the "www." side.

What information do I need to send?

I have also tried the extension you suggested and it does not work for me. The only page that is not working is the FrontPage. All the other pages of my site work just fine. :pop

My solution:
DO NOT use or paste formatted texts into your articles!! Messes it up.
I opened the article that was not displaying properly... looked at the HTML code and there was LOADS of rubbish code there, that was preventing it displaying proper...

I deleted the extra bits and voila! Magic!!

What File??
I've looked at index.php in root, index.html in the root of template.
In the index.php file of templates/ja_purity this is what I have (note: I have a 1.5 install of Joomla, only a few days old).

Code: Select all

UPDATE: It was some code I integrated into the template code to make the logo at the top left corner a link back to the homepage:

Code: Select all

<a href="http://www.gracehomesystems.com"<div id="logo"></div></a>
just forgot the close the link with a '>':

Code: Select all

<a href="http://www.gracehomesystems.com"><div id="logo"></div></a>
this "little mistake" effected every line of code below it...fixed now!

Having the same sort of issue on my site.
Everything ends up on the left.

Works fine in FF and Chrome.
Only messes up in IE as far as I know.

Site is http://britscapes.co.uk/
