Double column on front page

Double column on front page

I would like to inspect the component that displays the double column on the front page and the news page. Eventually I would like to build my own. Where is it hiding?

Also, I have been looking for a couple of tutorials: a short explanation of the most common php commands used in the templates and one on component writing.

Been looking but haven't had any luck.

Maybe if you're not good at coding. Using themes that come with 2 column would be easier.
